The benefits of relaxation are best achieved through consistency and repetition. Even a few minutes each day adds up over time. Try to set 5-10 minutes a day aside for yourself to relax and see what happens!

Applied relaxation can help relieve tension and stress in four common areas that hold it the most.

This exercise combines the relaxing benefits of complete natural breathing with the curative value of positive auto-suggestion. This means using your own power of suggestion to help yourself. Bookmark this exercise and give it a try!

07/30/2021

This is your daily reminder to take a few minutes to yourself to relax. Relaxation is so important to your overall health and wellbeing, especially when you are recovering from chronic pain.

07/27/2021

In our last post we discussed some of the benefits of relaxation. Here are a few more ways that a regular relaxation practice can help you…

07/21/2021

Research has told us that a regular relaxation practice can help individuals with chronic pain in many ways. Some of these ways include:

An increase in activity
Less severity of pain
Less anxiety
Less depression
Less anger
Fewer visits to health care facilities

A regular relaxation practice can help you in many ways as the mind and body work together to help reduce stress.

Practicing positive self-talk WHILE you feel pain can help you ease your symptoms and make you feel in control. Below is an example of something you can say to yourself while in pain:

“It does not help to lie and hurt. Perhaps if I use this pain as a chance to control my reactions, I won’t hurt as bad in the future”.

Remember, you are most likely to succeed if you work steadily and consistently at countering your negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. What are some positive self-talk techniques you use while you are in pain? Let us know in the comments.

07/17/2021

The Gate Theory of Pain tells us that non-painful input closes nerve “gates” to painful input, which prevents pain from travelling to the central nervous system.
What opens the pain gate: stress, dwelling on pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety/worry. What closes the pain gate: relaxation, heat or cold measures, physical therapy, positive attitude, positive self-talk.

The things you say to yourself (your thoughts) about pain can help you to change your pain experience. Look for the positive in your situation and it will help you change your relationship with pain and better manage your symptoms.

07/13/2021

Practicing positive self-talk before you feel pain can help you manage the pain better when it comes. Below is an example of something you can say to yourself before the pain comes:

“I’m not hurting right now. By thinking of other things, I can make this good feeling last longer. I’ll make the pain less severe when it comes”.

What are some positive self-talk techniques you use before pain? Let us know in the comments.

Looseness is the term to describe the feeling of knee instability. Patients feel the sensation of their knee twisting or moving side to side during basic activities. Though multiple causes can lead to this
form of instability ranging from injuries to ligaments to knee Osteoarthritis and Patellar instability. But not to worry because an unstable knee can be
treated with non-surgical solutions, and this is where the GenuTrain Knee brace comes in.

The GenuTrain Comfort with Silicone Grip Top helps you to regain confidence in your knee to enable movements that promote recovery. It comes with
the addition of the Silicone Grip Top to prevent the brace from slipping. It relieves your pain and promotes mobility through intermittent compression massage and stimulation of targeted pressure points. In doing so, it activates the stabilizing leg muscles and improves coordination.
At the same time, it promotes the metabolism and the reduction of swelling for accelerated recovery.

At Avella we know that pain is complex and has many aspects leading to our patients’ perception of pain. We offer a range of evidence-based psychological treatments that are suited to each patients’ individual situation.

If your main pain specialist recommends you have adjunctive psychological therapy, you will undergo a range of assessments and a session with the psychological pain specialist, who will determine, together with you, what therapy type is needed.

Just because you cannot see something does not mean that it isn’t there. At Avella we understand that your pain is real and that it is a very personal experience that is influenced by various factors.

06/11/2021

We want to help you keep moving! That doesn’t always mean stretching, strengthening or running (although it can). Usually it means helping you get back to the activities you love (playing with your kids/grandkids, gardening, woodworking, cycling, hitting the gym).
