Is your toilet running?

Not the exercise kind, but the kind that's wasting water and driving up your water bill?

Don't worry, we've got you covered!
Follow these simple steps to fix it yourself:

Turn off the water supply valve located behind the toilet.

Remove the lid from the toilet tank.

Check the flapper valve to see if it's worn out or damaged. If so, replace it.

Check the chain that connects the flapper valve to the flush handle. Make sure it's not too tight or too loose.

If the above steps don't work, it's time to call in a professional plumber.

Remember, fixing a running toilet can save you money and reduce water waste.

What should you never put in your garbage disposal?

Garbage disposals work to grind up unwanted items, such as leftover food and flush them down the drain with running water. Items such as plastic or glass might be obvious choices not to put down the drain but there are some other not so obvious items. Think of it this way, if you’d wouldn’t chew it, then your disposal won’t either.

Here’s a brief list of examples of what not to put down the drain:
1️⃣ Coffee grounds are difficult for a garbage disposal to get rid of, and they can easily get stuck.

2️⃣ Egg shells. There's no way to grind them finely enough to let them go down your drain and their membranes grip onto the blades of your disposal.

3️⃣ Stringy foods - This includes squash, the peel of potatoes, and any other type of vegetable that is high in fiber. It's not wise to put these types of foods down the garbage disposal, because they don't break down well.

4️⃣ Here’s one you can chew, but your disposal shouldn’t- Pasta! Pasta can wreak havoc on the garbage disposal, because it expands when it gets wet, leading to clogs.

5️⃣ If it’s not food, it’s best place is the recycle bin, compost or trash. Don’t risk damaging your disposal or causing a clog.

If your kitchen sink is starting to smell, it's probably time to give it a good cleaning. Here are a few tips to get rid of that nasty smell:

1. Clean the drain trap: This is where most of the gunk and grime builds up, so give it a good scrubbing with some dish soap and hot water.

2. Disinfect the sink: Mix up a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water and use a sponge to wipe down the entire sink. Make sure to wear rubber gloves. Rinse well with hot water.

3. Deodorize the sink: Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, then follow with 1 cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes, then flush with hot water.

Bonus Tip for Garburators:
- Use 1/4 cup salt, 1 cup of ice cups and 1/2 a lemon. Run the ice and salt through first, then drop the lemon with hot water and run your disposal again. The salt and ice help clean off any stuck on food or residue, then the lemon cleans and removes odours while releasing it's own fresh scent.

If after you've tried these ideas, there still is a lingering smell, especially something similar to a sewer smell, call your local plumber right away. You may dealing with something more serious that needs a professional's touch.

🛑 Stop Leaks Before They Start!

Frozen pipes can pose an unseen hazard that you may not notice until the weather begins to warm up. Unfortunately, water damage might be serious and costly by then.

Because water expands when it freezes, it places undue strain on pipes. When water freezes, the force generated by the expansion can cause a pipe to break, regardless of the material's strength. Because the water has frozen to ice, you may not realize you have a ruptured pipe. When the temperature rises and the thawing process begins, leaks and floods may happen.

Fortunately, keeping your home warmer, at a steady temperature, and more insulated during winter can help keep your pipes from freezing.

Which pipelines are most vulnerable?
During the winter, pipes that are most exposed to the weather, such as those outside and along the external walls of your home, may require additional protection.
These could be:
- Interior water pipes in unheated areas such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and kitchen and bathroom cupboards.
- Pipes that run against external walls and have little or no insulation.
- Outdoor hose connections and faucets
- Sprinkler lines for the lawn

How Can You Help Prevent Frozen Pipes?
- Maintain a minimum temperature of 12 degrees in your home.
- Keep garage doors closed to keep the cold away from water pipes in the garage.
- Cabinets with plumbing inside should have their doors opened. This can aid in the circulation of warmer air around the pipes.
- Close interior valves feeding water to outside faucets and connections
- Allow remaining water to drain from exterior faucets; keep them open during cold winter months when the water supply is shut off.

We live where it can get frigidly 🥶 cold in winter.

Don't let winter wreak havoc on your home.
It's easy to prevent winter water damage with our simple steps.

1) Insulate any pipes that are in unheated areas.
2) Keep your thermostats up, over 12°C is ideal.
3) Drain water from exterior faucets.

Not Again!

You're just trying to get ready for the day when you realize the water in your sink or shower is rising faster than it's draining.

Don't worry though. A slow moving drain can often be helped with simple household ingredients.

Give this DIY a go next time your sink moves too slow 😉

1️⃣ Mix 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup salt and 2 tablespoons cream of tartar in a jar. (This makes enough for 2 uses)
2️⃣ Close the jar and give it a good shake.
3️⃣ Pour half of the jar’s contents down drain.
4️⃣ Follow the solution with 4Litres of hot water and let it sit in the drain for one hour.
5️⃣ After an hour, turn on your faucet to rinse any remaining solution down the drain.

If your drains are clogging frequently, release a foul odor, or simple DIY solutions just don't cut it, then you need a licensed and professional plumber.
