This depth + ulceration = Referral to Multidisciplinary Melanoma Clinic = sampling lymph nodes + surgical removal + ongoing dermatologist skin checks x 5 years

Fortunately, SPF + Advances in Melanoma Treatment = Positive Outcomes!

From ridiculed to rid of it.

After just 2 sets of steroid injections into this plaque of lichen simplex chronicus, this patient’s itch & texture has finally resolved & his friends stopped ridiculing him for it!

Lichen simplex chronicus can often be found in eczema patients and results from chronic scratching an itchy area. Unfortunately, scratching only releases more itch signals, causing further itching and tightening of the skin. Steroid injections into the area helps to break the itch scratch cycle.

WOW, what a landmark collaboration between Dermatology, General Surgery & Plastic Surgery this week!

, Dr Chris Keeling & Dr Ralph George (a General Surgeon from Toronto) spoke at Calgary Surgical Grand Rounds to strengthen our relationships in caring for patients.

We even had a chance to connect with colleagues from Rheumatology, Emergency Medicine & Infectious Diseases the night before!

My initiative for these discussions came from an overwhelming need for help from our colleagues, especially our surgical ones in managing severe HS. I hope this is the first step to our dream of having each other on the team!

Over 100 medical students spent time out of their evening to learn about skin cancers - did you know that skin cancers can DEFINITELY occur in patients with sun of colour, and are often diagnosed at later stages because of lower awareness & recognition?

Dermatology in Colour is just one small step to building skin equality & diversity in education, and it’s incredible to see the changes in two short years of graduating from residency already!

Giving back is the best gift!

This work was commissioned by special request as the patient could not bear the thought of waiting 4 months for Mohs Surgery, which would be the typical treatment for an SCC this large. Extra wide margins were taken in light of this.

I feel incredibly grateful to have been invited to attend as an ambassador to learn from my international colleagues & share this knowledge with my own colleagues in Canada!🇨🇦

We discussed new breakthrough treatments for immune-mediated inflammatory conditions, including alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and vitiligo.

I truly love dermatology & attending conferences always reminds me what a privilege it is to be in the field that I love!

Did you know that neuromodulators can be used for medical concerns & not just cosmetic reasons? These include hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), chronic migraines & jaw clenching, just to name a few! 💉

Not all dermatologists or injectors are trained to do these treatments, but these are some of my most rewarding & favourite treatments that I do, combining my training in cosmetic facial anatomy with medical injection techniques!

I think of neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin & Nuceiva as a tool - kind of like a lightsaber, because once you master your tool & craft, a whole universe of treatment unfolds!

Work uniform 🔥🥼👟🏒🥅

There isn’t a week that goes by that a patient doesn’t say, “This reminds me of !”

So, this is a Dilated Pore of Winer, but did you know that if it’s not excised properly, it will recur? That’s because it technically has a cyst lining, so unless the lining is also removed, the keratin plug can reform again.

Having the right diagnosis DOES matter & that’s the power of understanding the subtleties between the thousands of diagnoses dermatologists know!

Did you know that dermatologists are also surgically trained to excise skin cancers like this invasive nodular melanoma?

It’s important to follow international guidelines & remove additional skin once the diagnosis of skin cancer has been confirmed with an initial biopsy since there may be residual cancer cells left that can grow again if this is not done. 🔬

We excised this tumour completely for full depth analysis before referring him to a multidisciplinary melanoma centre for further treatment.

Oh, and if you’re wondering what the red square around the tumour is, this patient also has an allergic contact dermatitis to the adhesive bandage he was applying onto the area. 🩹
