Owl's Nest Books
Calgary oldest independent bookstore, supporting local readers and writers for the last 40 years! Owl's Nest Books is Calgary's oldest independent book store.
We've been recommending books to Calgary readers for 40 years. Books that are worth talking about and worth reading. And worth owning. We've long been known as the city's most informed book store. We take seriously our responsibility to pass on that love of books to a whole new generation of readers. W

A truly original book in every sense of the word, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows poetically defines emotions we all feel but don’t have the words to express—until now. 🖋️
Have you ever wondered about the lives of each person you pass on the street, realizing that everyone is the main character in their own story, each living a life as vivid and complex as your own? That feeling has a name: “sonder.” Or you were looking through old photos and felt a pang of nostalgia for a time you’ve never actually experienced. That’s “anemoia.”
If you’ve never heard of these terms before, that’s because they didn’t exist until John Koenig set out to fill the gaps in our language of emotion. By turns poignant, relatable, and mind-bending, the definitions include whimsical etymologies drawn from languages around the world, interspersed with otherworldly collages and lyrical essays that explore forgotten corners of the human condition.
The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is for anyone who enjoys a shift in perspective, pondering the ineffable feelings that make up our lives. With a gorgeous package and beautiful illustrations throughout, this is the perfect gift for creatives, word nerds, and human beings everywhere.
Bottoms up, Nesters! Whether it’s a cocktail, mocktail, wine, or an ice-cold beer, we’re ready to toast to good times and your next summer read! 🍹
Now available in Paperback - a quirky group of seniors attempts to solve one murder while covering up another—with the help of an enterprising tortoise—in this twisty, darkly funny mystery from the author Leonie Swann and translated by Amy Bojang! 🔎
Agnes Sharp and the residents of Sunset Hall—a house share for the elderly in the English countryside—are used to minor inconveniences like misplaced glasses and declining mobility. But when a police officer arrives with news of a body discovered next door, they're secretly relieved it's not the one they're hiding in the shed (sorry, Lillith). Now, they must solve their neighbour's murder and pin it on someone else to cover up their own crime. With a plan in place, the geriatric gang springs into a wild investigation, facing off against sinister bakers, broken stairlifts, and their own dark secrets.
New Releases today include Anna Marie Tendler's memoir Men Have Called Her Crazy, Yoko Ogawa's Mina's Matchbox and T.J. Newman's latest Worst Case Scenario! And available in paperback is Richard Osman's fourth book in the Thursday Murder Club series, The Last Devil to Die! Plus, SOOOO many more!

Our beloved co-owner (and resident bowtie enthusiast) Ryan is the latest Nester up for What We're Reading! When he hasn't been zipping around to literary events, Wordfest or festivals around Calgary, Ryan has enjoyed all sorts of reads! 📚️
Fun fact: Ryan has a soft spot for pirates, so he recommends The Penguin Book of Pirates by Katherine Howe and Dark Water Daughter by H.M. Long. He also loved Calgary’s own Wakefield Brewster’s Wakeword, Megan Bannen’s The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy, and true to his love of depressing literary fiction, Benjamin Labatut’s The Maniac.
Want more Ryan-approved reads? Swing by The Nest and ask! He’s always around!
