Are spring showers triggering your migraines? You’re not alone. As many as one in three people with chronic migraines say that weather changes affect their symptoms.
For some people, weather changes can cause imbalances in brain chemicals like serotonin, that can bring on a migraine. Changes in barometric pressure and windy or stormy weather can also be triggers.

Whether you’ve overdone it on a family bike ride, playing with the kids in the swimming pool or while working in the garden, a sore back can put a real cramp in your summer plans.
Luckily, the kinks can usually be worked out in a few simple steps. Here’s how to take care of a sore back:
• Step 1: Ice it for the first 48 hours, five to 10 minutes at a time
• Step 2: After two days, use hot showers and heating pads to soothe the area
• Step 3: Get lots of rest for several days
A red, itchy, sore ear could signal a common complaint during the summer months: swimmer’s ear.
Swimmer’s ear is an infection in the tube that runs from your eardrum to the outer part of your ear. It’s often brought on by water that remains in your ear, creating a moist environment where bacteria can grow.
This infection can usually be treated with prescription ear drops. Ask our Medication Expert for recommendation.
Cases of strep throat have peaked in recent months. Strep throat is caused by a bacteria and is treatable, but can be serious for young children, older adults and people who have a weak immune system.
Symptoms of strep throat can include:
• Severe sore throat that comes on suddenly
• Fever
• Painful swallowing
• Tiny red spots on back of the throat or roof of your mouth
Our pharmacist can advise on whether you should have a strep test to confirm. If you do have strep throat, you’ll need an antibiotic treatment.
Summer vacation is calling! But if you’re headed on a far-flung holiday, you should make sure you’re up to date on your travel vaccines.
Depending on where you are travelling, you could be at risk for many vaccine preventable illnesses. For many places, the immunizations you might need could include protection for hepatitis A, travellers’ diarrhea, and meningitis.

If you’ve spotted white or yellow patches on your baby’s tongue or on the inside of your child’s cheeks, they may have a fungal infection called thrush. Thrush is most common in young kids, but can affect adults, too. (In adults, symptoms can also include a cottony feeling in your mouth and loss of taste.)
Here are three things you can do to help prevent thrush:
1- Practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. If your baby uses a bottle or a pacifier, thoroughly clean them in hot water or the dishwasher after each use.
2- See your dentist regularly. This is especially important if you have certain health issues, like diabetes.
3- Limit the amount of sugar and yeast-containing foods you eat.
Lyme disease can be serious. The best way to prevent it is to not get bitten by a blacklegged tick.
When heading outdoors, help avoid a bite by:
• Tucking your pants into your socks
• Wearing closed-toed shoes
• Opting for light-coloured clothing
• Doing a full-body check on yourself, your kids, and pets when you head indoors
Stop by the pharmacy for advice on how to correctly remove a tick in case someone in your household gets bitten.

Hello warm weather, hello sandals! With summer fast approaching, it’s time to pull out your sandals or head out to treat yourself to a new pair. Opting for sandals that fit well, and pairing sneakers and loafers with moisture-wicking socks, can help to prevent those painful blisters that sometimes surface. If you do end up with one, the good news is that most blisters heal naturally after three to seven days.
Talk to our pharmacist if your wound doesn’t appear to be getting better after a week, or if there are any signs of infection (like heat around the area, swelling, or yellow/green discharge). They can also recommend over-the-counter products to assist with healing, including ointments and gel pads, for example.
