Hearing no can be very triggering for us as parents. We have a huge responsibility to care for them & keep them safe, and when we don't have their cooperation, this can be highly triggering. However, if we want our children to be able to set appropriate boundaries with others, they need to be able to set boundaries with us first.

If your child says "no" you can still respond in a compassionate way that respects their answer. Here are a few tips on dealing with NO:

(1) Give empathy (i.e., I hear you don't want to do that)

(2) Offer them a choice (i.e., Would you like the red cup or the blue cup.)

(3) Don't react right away. Give them and yourself space and come back to it when emotions aren't running so high and try your request again

(4) Consider their no. Maybe their request is legitimate (we can get stuck in the loop of saying no and entering power struggles) and maybe they're simply looking for some autonomy. Maybe it's ok to let them pick their own outfit for the day? Maybe they HATE spinach but they do like another type of veggie?
