Here is an interesting editorial from Today's Trucking News about attracting young drivers to the industry. "Young people are an important demographic to attract if the trucking industry hopes to overcome the driver shortage."
One way to attract young employees is through new technologies being utilized in the trucking industry. For example, "One thing we have going for us when it comes to attracting young employees is the technology that's in the truck. But we don't do enough to promote it. Spec' those trucks up with all the tech you can and young drivers will come. They will embrace 'cool' technologies like adaptive cruise control, driver coaching apps, pre-trip assistants, etc. Not to mention the zero-emission trucks that are coming in the not-too-distant future."

There is a shortage of truck drivers in Canada. Now is the time to take the wheel and start a promising new career in trucking!
Here is some crucial information from the Canadian Trucking Alliance:
"As all Canadians have become acutely aware, there is a critical commercial driver shortage exacerbating the North American supply chain challenges everyone has been experiencing. In its 2022 Pre-budget submission, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has submitted a plan for the Government of Canada to address the critical commercial driver shortage and help secure Canada's economic recovery by stabilizing the supply chain."
"Currently, there are over 23,000 truck driver vacancies in Canada, which is expected to increase to over 55,000 vacancies in 2024," said CTA Chair Jean-Claude Fortin. "This shortage of professional drivers is having a negative impact on the supply chain and, by extension, the economic recovery of Canada."
CTA has several recommendations, which you can read here:

Top Ten Questions to Ask a Truck Driving School, Part 3.
Are you ready to shift into your trucking career? Is it your time to try something new and do you need formal training? Everyone learns differently and finding the right fit for you is essential to getting your career off to the best start.
We’ve compiled a list of questions for you to help you make the right decision when choosing your truck driving training school.
Here are questions 8 to 10:
8. How will the school prepare me for winter driving?
This one is easy if you are taking a course in January or February; however, if you are taking a course in July, the first time you drive in the snow and ice will be on the job, make sure the school you choose has a method to prepare you.
9. What post-graduation employment support does the school offer?
There are many jobs out there for new drivers, your training school should be able to point you in the right direction to make sure you are making the most money and that your first job out of school aligns with your career goals.
10. What are some of the employers the school works with?
You should confirm the companies that the school works with matching your career goals. If the school works mostly with long haul carriers, but your goal is to be home every day that’s not a great match.
We hope these questions to ask a truck driving school help you get the answers that you need to find the best school for you.
Until next time, Take the Wheel.

Top Ten Questions to Ask a Truck Driving School, Part 2.
Are you ready to shift into your trucking career? Is it your time to try something new and do you need formal training? Everyone learns differently and finding the right fit for you is essential to getting your career off to the best start.
We’ve compiled a list of questions for you to help you make the right decision when choosing your truck driving training school.
Here are questions 4 to 7:
4. How many hours of training is offered?
The minimum licensing standard requires you to take 103.5 hours of training; however, most employers are going to want to see 200 hours (or more) because their insurance usually requires it.
5. Will I be training on a standard or automatic transmission?
Although some trucks on the road are automatic, there are still many that are not. Shifting a truck is different than driving a car. Make sure the school you choose offers training on a standard transmission and lets you road test with a standard transmission.
Be ready for every job, not just some!
6. What tools and resources does the school have if I require additional help while in training?
Not all schools are created equal, find out how the school will help you be successful.
7. What if I don’t pass my road test the first time?
It can happen, but not to worry. Quality truck driving schools will offer free road tests, extra training, etc. Be wary of the schools that make money off you failing.

Cross-town or cross-country, the choice is yours. The face of trucking and the career opportunities it provides are changing.

Here is another essential skill to be a truck driver:
CONTINUING EDUCATION
After you left school, you continued to learn, without perhaps realizing it. Did you take a first aid course, watch YouTube videos on how to do something, listen to podcasts, read articles? If so, you've done what's called continuing education. Continuing education is lifelong learning. Because the trucking industry changes on a regular basis, you must be prepared to adapt and always continue to learn new ways of doing things.
You may be required to take a variety of training courses, such as:
• operating a forklift
• transporting hazardous materials
• using new technological tools
• fuel-saving techniques
• laws and regulations for truck driving

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
You have surely noticed that technology is everywhere both in our personal and professional lives. The trucking industry is no exception. Tasks are becoming more automated and truck drivers are continually required to adapt. Improving your technical literacy skills is a way of becoming more confident while performing these tasks:
• read dashboard gauges
• read electronic road maps and routes
• enter data into the electronic logbook
• use electronic stability control technology
• complete daily inspection reports detailing vehicle condition
• operate automated loading and unloading systems

• lire les indicateurs du tableau de bord ;
• lire une carte routière et des itinéraires électroniques ;
• entrer des données dans le journal de bord électronique ;
• utiliser la technologie de contrôle électronique de la stabilité ;
• remplir des rapports d’inspection quotidiens qui précisent l’état du véhicule ;
