Ken Wallis Chats With Canadian Blues & Roots Artist Brandon Isaak By Ken Wallis. Brandon Isaak is the product of a dad who has been a musician all his life. His influence started Brandon down the road of a music career. He’s a marvellous musician, plays solid acoustic guitar, and gushes out lyrics like the Niagara Falls. But he’s more than all that. He’s a t...

Today on Balmoral Blues we’ll hear from well known New York-based blues rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa. Exposed to the blues at an early age by his father, by 12 he was gigging around New York and Pennsylvania with his band, Smokin’ Joe Bonamassa. In 1989 he opened a series of shows for blues legend BB King. He released his debut album in 2000. His subsequent three albums, released between 2002 and 2006, all hit no. 1 on the Billboard blues chart. In 2009 he played at the Royal Albert Hall with childhood hero Eric Clapton. Known for both covers and original songs as well as his frequent collaborations, he has played with a huge range of artists including Gregg Allman, Paul Rodgers Official, and Beth Hart. He also produces, and in 2020 formed independent record label and not-for-profit Keeping the Blues Alive to promote and support the talents of blues musicians. He has been nominated for 3 Grammy awards and played at a variety of prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Sydney and Vienna opera houses. He is the subject of the documentary “Guitar Man” by Paramount Pictures, hosts a radio show on Sirius XM, and hosts the podcast “Live Form Nerdville”. He is also famous for his extensive collection of vintage guitars and amplifiers. Bonamassa has released 16 studio and 19 live albums. His latest, “Blues Deluxe Vol. 2”, hit stores and streaming on October 6.
Today’s show also features Duncan, British Columbia singer-songwriter Brandon Isaak Live. Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, Isaak is known for his thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics, which are at turns humorous, introspective and spiritual. A guitar and harmonica player as well as a vocalist, his singing voice is gravelly and raw and can sometimes seem too big for his body. His live shows are heavy on audience-engagement, taking the crowd on an emotional journey that leaves them still humming his melodies long after the set has ended. A 37-year veteran of the blues scene, he has toured Europe 13 times and played in 8 countries over 3 continents. He has been nominated for two Juno and multiple Maple Blues awards. In addition to music, Isaak also paints, sculpts, and dances, and has produced a series of silent films, available on his website. He released his seventh album, “One Step Closer”, in September. Also on today’s show are Ray Bonneville Music, Jason Ricci and The Bad Kind (feat. Kaitlin Dibble), Muddy Waters, André Bisson, Lady A, Thornetta Davis, Oscar Wilson, Paul Boddy & The Slidewinder Blues Band, Al Basile, Franck L. Goldwasser, Mark Cameron Band, and Ghalia Volt.
