Summer fun.
Salvator and Carmela in the wild. Should be a fun summer.
A fun few hours at the forestry train ride today
Oriole has new wheels this spring.
Work in progress. “The Turning”
The moment
when night becomes day
when summer turns to autumn
when our earth overheats
like an arrows liberation from its bow
happens suddenly
when will we ever learn
?
The joy of painting the lovely crusty textures of our spectacular Arbutus characters is tempered with the knowledge that these stately trees are unable to cope with a heating planet. They are unlikely to thrive through another generation. Surely appreciation of such beauty will convince mankind to adjust our lives to accommodate their survival. We hope.
This painting is coming together nicely, the foreground is completely un addressed but the heat of the moment is coming through now. I feel excited about bringing it in for a safe landing over the next couple of weeks.
Just an update for anyone interested.
Peace,
Bill
Yesterday at the museum.
WIP. I’m working on this little study . Playing with values, colours and composition in preparation for a really big piece. A canvas so big I had to build a custom roof rack for the van to get it home. Barely fit into the house. Still not sure how to get it into my studio. It’s a lot of real estate to cover so I need to have some idea of a plan before I commit. I will post the final result of this study pretty soon. I want to do one more study a size larger than this so I can experiment with different techniques. I expect the resulting large painting will be a synthesis of these two. The dopamine is pumping, stay tuned.
Hello friends, I am starting to get organized in preparation for a fun outdoor group show in July. I was pleased to be invited and am deciding which paintings to offer. This one, “The sands of time“ is 48X48”, oil on a silver leaf ground. It is finally settled enough for a final varnish. I will be including several pieces from my precious metal “period” at special reduced prices especially for this local event. They will look spectacular in the natural outdoor light.I will update you as the time draws near. The location is on a beautiful rural property set amongst lovely hobby farms and gardens. There will be live music as well as gelato. And ducks! I’m looking forward to and hope to see some of you there.
Have a great evening!

“Pacific Meditation“ is finished. 36X60”. The eroded sandstone is testament to centuries of vigorous wave activity but calm evenings and mornings give opportunity for quiet reflection.
SOLD, “Disrupting a Conpiracy”. Perhaps I should say, Adopted! This piece has been rented by some “foster parents” for some time now and today they have taken the plunge. Big thanks to my collectors as well as Karen at https://aggv.ca/massey-sales-gallery/ .
Have a great day my friend.
Piece,
Bill
I haven’t posted for a bit. Here is my wip, the little white touches are wet and opaque. They will dry in transparently. I am maintaining some luminosity as much as I can while trying to express the subtle variations in colour that the century’s of erosion create in sandstone. This process of exploration is my way of creating art. I find if I meditate on my subject and allow myself freedom to respond as the subject suggests to me then I am rewarded with a satisfying piece. Much to do.
Life in the garden.
Reflecting on the day.
Purple Rain
This is the artist wondering what is being prepared for him on the lido deck.
After the flood.
Spuds anyone?
I thought I’d post this WIP. The afternoon north light washes over yet another glaze. Slowly I build up a subtle dance of colour between Hansa yellow and Quinacridona violet. I will eventually start to lose my value plan at which time I can dive in with some definition. Ultramarine blue for the dark bits and some lightened more opaque values in the lit areas. These sea eroded sandstone shores are soft and quiet at low tide. The strongest thing here is the burnt grasses above the bank. Anyway, I am away from my easel for a week so until then… Peace… Bill
“Sanctuary”, 36X60”, oil. Forest interiors are one of my favourite ”thin places”. I guess that is why painting them brings me peace.
Have a great weekend. … Bill.
“The other side”. When will we ever learn to be content? How much energy and time do we expend as we strive for that which is on the other side?
This little oil was created with numerous transparent glazes giving it a lovely translucency. Available for purchase in a linen and wood frame. Free shipping anywhere. Peace….Bill.
So these are two of my almost finished current paintings. very different process’ between large and small. I tend to pull out the small brushes for the little ones now. I really enjoy both experiences. What scale do you prefer to work in? does it take you an inordinate amount of time for the small ones?
and now for something completely different.
”Love Compression (she’s so heavy)”, 9X12”, oil. Available for a limited time.
Can we eat yet?
