Turns out when we are blindfolded and have our nose plugged, we can’t taste the flavours of a pumpkin spice latte. Anyone who has had a head cold can attest to flavours being muted. But keep the blindfold on, unplug the nose and voila..the wafting combination of cinnamon, cloves, allspice and nutmeg creates memories that for many people, are associated with warm, cozy, happy times.

that the brain processes between 6,000 to 70,000 per day- depending on what research you look at. That’s a pretty big discrepancy but seems to come down to what is considered a “thought”. The tools used to measure thoughts are based on neural activity in the brain. But a thought is more than a single entity. If you think of a visit to a beach in Mexico, it’s comprised of many sensory inputs. The colours of the sky and water, the feeling of the sand on your feet and the wind on your face, the sounds of the water lapping on the shore. So is that 1 thought or 100? It makes sense that there is a discrepancy. The real point is- your processes a lot in 24 hours.
Interestingly, of all your thoughts, your brain holds on to the negative ones more easily. It’s a primitive-survival instinct to keep us on our toes in the face of danger. But we aren’t supposed to stay there. Negative thoughts can become triggers and eventually, creating thought ruts guiding our day.
The good news is the brain can change.
