In the 2000 federal election Kenneth Kirk ran for the Ma*****na Party in Edmonton Strathcona. That was the same year he got out of prison and recorded the CD "Love Songs from Drug Prison" with Amy von Stackelberg, Professor Alan Young of Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto and Dr. Lester Grinspoon of Harvard Medical School in Boston. Young was the lawyer who beat the w**d paraphernalia laws and forced the courts to allow medical ma*****na in Canada. Grinspoon was the foremost expert on medical ma*****na in the world. In 2001,16 years before legalization was announced, Avril Magera and Ken Kirk opened a w**d store and Ma*****na Party HQ across the street from the Edmonton Courthouse, grew 171 plants in the store display window and sold w**d and seeds in front of the police for over a year. Ken Kirk, Dave Dowling, Amy von Stackelberg, and Avril Magera (Kirk's partner at the store) were the first in Canada to demonstrably beat the pot laws.

Because I've had heart attacks and epilepsy (which can cause a heart attack) I was afraid of attempting too much because I was afraid the stress would kill me. A good indicator of my stress level is how easily I sleep. I almost never get more than 5 or 6 hours. So I take on organizing a music festival and cannabis convention ten days ago and suddenly I'm sleeping better than ever and don't need to smoke as much w**d as before. I was very stressed about my life being a waste of time too. I needed to get inspired to realize how much. i forgot to set my alarm last night and slept for 11 hours. I never do that. And I feel more refreshed than I have in ages. I'm not sure I want retirement now. I was "retired" on crappy disability funding for years and it drove me nuts and stressed me out. I was just tolerating it for so long it felt normal. F**k that, I'm going to dream big again. It's way more fun.

Our home town hero turns 86 on March 24 Edmonton should honor him before it's too late.

I'm very pleased that this movie was made. I'm also shocked that it took me 9 years to even find it. I'm amazed that they never mentioned or interviewed Cameron Noyes (promoter), Nicola Fairbrother (the lady who worked the Ambo door the most), or myself Ken Kirk (the guy who booked the majority of the Ambo shows). When Nirvana played the Bronx because bars couldn't open on sundays back then and they were only available sunday. SO we gave the show to the Bronx. They were just a dance club at the time and had no p.a. So we pulled my p.a. out of the Ambassador for that show. There were about 50-60 people. Two other dead Edmonton venues I ran were Eco-City Multi Purpose Rumpus Room at 9523 Jasper Ave and Apocalypso at 10018-105 St. I miss all the venues in the movie. Other old dearly missed venues were Spartan's Men's Club at 12645-66St. And on the and the short lived original punk club in Edmonton, the "Su***de Club" between 100 and 101 St in the alley about 102 ave behind Holly's Nostalgia.

Carl Sagan and Dr. Lester Grinspoon were best friends, Here is a shot from Grinspoon's wedding where Sagan was best man. Look at how happy they are. They were close. Grinspoon was the world's foremost expert on medical ma*****na, he was a prof and did research at Harvard. And I connected with him first on Myspace and then Sagan as well.
