We visited VERTICAL ROOTS EDMONTON which grows hydroponic lettuce, herbs and other greens.
I can't wait to share this new series with you which looks at the sustainable food practices that are altering the future of food and the environment.
Thanks to Thomas Dudley who spent the day filming with me.

Did someone say food?
That's what visiting Louisiana is all about.
Honestly the food is incredible in St. Tammany Parish.
It's one of the stops for my new travel series Brandy Yanchyk Sees the World. I travel to Pat's Rest Awhile in Mandeville which is known as the The Northshore. It's about an hour from New Orleans.
I visited with chef and restaurant owner Pat Gallagher. He is an icon in the restaurant industry and we got to eat in the restaurant's restored cottage from the 1850s.
My new travel documentary series "Brandy Yanchyk Sees the World" will be airing on public TV stations in the USA including PBS.

Recently we filmed on the Tammany Trace in St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. It was so much fun. The area is also known as The Northshore and is about an hour from New Orleans.
You'll be able to find out about the fun we had in my new travel documentary series Brandy Yanchyk Sees the World.
It will be airing on public TV stations in the USA including PBS.
"Originally a corridor for the Illinois Central Railroad, the Tammany Trace is now a hike and bike trail that spans from downtown Covington, through Abita Springs, Mandeville and Lacombe and ends in Slidell. A separate equestrian path parallels the Trace in several places. St. Tammany Parish government purchased the abandoned Illinois Central Railroad corridor on December 20, 1992. With the help of grants and federal dollars, St. Tammany Parish government has asphalted 31 miles, remodeled railroad trestles into pedestrian bridges, and maintained the Trace." - http://www.tammanytrace.org

The highlight of my recent trip to Louisiana was filming at the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Hall in what is now Old Mandeville.
This place is famous! It is believed to be the world's oldest unaltered rural jazz hall. Early greats Buddy Petit, Kid Ory and a young Louis Armstrong played there.
I was thrilled to film with Grammy award winning New Orleans musician, actor and author Chris Thomas King.
He's said to be "one of the worlds greatest blues guitar players." Chris also was in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? and played a character named Tommy Johnson who describes selling his soul to the devil to play guitar.
I also learned so much from Andrea Fulton who is part of the Friends of the Dew Drop organization.
You'll be able to hear Chris' music and learn all about the rich history of the Dew Drop in my new travel documentary series Brandy Yanchyk Sees the World. It will be airing on public TV stations in the USA including PBS.

While I'm traveling I love learning about the Indigenous people who live in the places I am visiting.
Recently I filmed at the Bayou Lacombe Museum in Lacombe, Louisiana. I met Karen Raymond and Anthony Lott who are both from the Choctaw Nation in Lacombe.
My experience there will be part of my new travel documentary series Brandy Yanchyk Sees the World which will be airing on public TV stations in the USA including PBS.
The Bayou Lacombe Museum is in St. Tammany Paris which is also known as the Northshore. It’s about an hour away from New Orleans.

I've been dreaming about the pork bbq ribs I helped make at Salty Joe's Restaurant in Hammond, Louisiana since I left.
They were delicious.

Who likes tea? I do.
I have a great story about tea!
A man named David Barron in Louisiana decided to retire and invest in a pine plantation an hour and a half outside of New Orleans where he and his family could enjoy the outdoor life.
His friend gave him some tea plants to plant and to his surprise they flourished.
Now he's started the Fleur De Lis Tea Company in Amite.
It's Louisiana’s first and only commercial tea farm.
I filmed with David and local tea farmer Hans Marchese for my new travel series Brandy Yanchyk Sees the World.
I can't wait to share his story with you.
The six part series will air on public TV stations in the USA including PBS later this year.
Thank you Charlie Whinham, Emily McKneely Matise and Thomas Dudley for all your hard work on this episode.

Congratulations to Dr. Tammara Soma who is the main character, co-director and co-writer in our documentary Food is My Teacher which you can watch now on CBC Gem.
Dr. Soma has won Simon Fraser University's 2023 Newsmaker award.
Learn more here:
"TAMMARA SOMA ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENT – 2023 SFU SOCIAL MEDIA NEWSMAKER OF THE YEAR
A trailblazer in Canadian food systems education, Tammara Soma is SFU’s 2023 Social Media Newsmaker of the Year for her commitment to online dialogue surrounding critical issues on food systems and waste management.
In recent years, Soma has become a well-known voice on social media for engaging with her followers about themes related to food systems and promoting discussions and events that delve deeper. She uses her virtual presence to share new research and perspectives with a growing audience.
A co-founder of SFU’s Food Systems Lab, Soma’s influence is exemplified in last year’s CBC feature documentary, Food is My Teacher , a project she co-developed and co-directed alongside Canadian filmmaker Brandy Yanchyk. In the film, Soma travels across B.C. and Alberta to meet with diverse communities, learn about their cultural relationships with food and illustrate the transformative power of food, which Soma considers a “means for healing” and a “source of medicine and love.”
After the launch of the documentary, Soma continued to use her social media platforms to engage with people about food systems, security and equity.
"Never in my dreams as a planner did I envision that I would be a documentary filmmaker, and that the film would be a way that I mobilize my research and passion for food,” says Soma. “Food is My Teacher would not be possible without the mentorship offered by Brandy Yanchyk, the support of the Faculty of Environment, and from CBC.”
“Now, the world can learn more about the amazing work we do at SFU and celebrate the diverse cultural and faith leaders who are working to demonstrate the healing power of food. In polarizing times, I hope to show the power of harnessing social media for good.”

Running a business, especially a brewery is not easy, so when I heard about how successful Gnarly Barley Brewing in Hammond, Louisiana was I had to check them out.
Gnarly Barley Brewing has won lots of awards and was recently named the 2023 Louey Award winner for Louisiana Attraction of the Year.
I visited their taproom and met with the owners Zac and Cari Caramonta and tasted their delicious beer.
You'll be able to meet them with me in my new documentary travel series Brandy Yanchyk Sees the World which is in production now.
The series will air on PBS stations across the USA later this year.
