Q***r Research Day is coming up this Friday, March. 15th at UNB! Q***r Research Day is a Celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ Research at UNB, and is the last of the 2023-2024 series of Q***r Research events hosted by the Faculty of Arts. It will begin in Tilley Hall, Room 28, and there are panels, workshops, and more planned from 8:30am to 9pm!
Everyone is welcome, and it is a free event! Refreshments will be provided.

Kevin Yiu is a q***r Hong Kong-Bostonian filmmaker with a passion for empowering his audience to be fully self-expressed and representing fringe humanity, especially in the LGBTQI+ space, through his work. He is currently completing his M.F.A. Film and Television Production at Loyola Marymount University. Yiu quitted his job as a pharmaceutical scientist in Boston to become a filmmaker in LA. His mission is to create a world without boundaries, where people with different ethnicities, sexualities and gender-expressions can coexist. Yiu’s work are inspired by his cultural and wild experience being out and about in both Hong Kong and America. His point of view is unapologetically q***r and he loves exploring dark, messy characters through comedy.

Brittany Alsot is a Chicago filmmaker focused on creating inclusive, empathetic working environments for cast and crew. Her q***r shorts have screened at dozens of festivals across the US and internationally. Up next, she's directing and producing the feature documentary, "Finding Your Laughter," about a Chicago comedian using improv to care for her dad who has Alzheimer's.

Kai is a Meanjin/Brisbane based filmmaker who is passionate about bringing the stories and experiences of underrepresented people to the screen. As a q***r, transgender man himself, Kai is specifically interested in merging the creative arts with activism, using storytelling to draw attention to the unique issues faced by minority groups—this concept inspired him to begin developing Uncovered Lives. “This topic is very close to my heart as it affects both me and many of my loved ones, and as a filmmaker this is something I know I can do to help my community.” Uncovered Lives is the start of what Kai hopes will be a long career in film, focusing on directing, editing, and screenwriting.

Miguel Melo is a writer/filmmaker based in LA, originally from Mexico. His work is heavily influenced by the Q***r and immigrant experience, identity, and flawed family dynamics. He studied Directing and TV Writing in the UCLA Extension Program. He’s a Berlinale Talent, received the NALIP Emerging Content Creators Scholarship in 2019, and was selected for the 2021 HBO’s Tomorrow’s Filmmakers, Today Program. His debut short film Valiente (Brave) premiered at the 2021 Outfest Fusion Film Festival. He’s currently the Writers’ PA of the Apple TV+ show “Acapulco.”

"I’m a freelance Visual Effects artist and have been involved in this field since my teens before studying Computer Animation at Bournemouth University. I’ve been involved in a number of sectors from Film, Broadcast/Television, Commercials, Corporate, Retail Graphics, Virtual Reality, Projection Installations, and Theatre effects. I’ve worked on shows for BBC, Hulu, Channel 4, National Geographic, PBS, History Channel and a number of commercial clients. I’ve also worked in the camera department for a number of TV shows and documentaries and am a freelance Arri Alexa operator and cinematographer.
Coming from a general creative background as an independent film director, photographer and musician, I try to bring these creative sensibilities to my work so it stands out visually, aesthetically and technically.
I grew up between Bournemouth and the French Alps and am a keen Skier and Rugby player. I’m highly passionate about every aspect of the filmmaking and creative process." - Matt Carter
