Cleaning up a yard after a hurricane can be a challenging task. โ›ˆ It's important to prioritize safety and follow a systematic approach. Here are the steps to clean up a yard after a hurricane:

09/15/2023

๐ŸŒ€Preparing Your Yard & Garden for a large storm๐Ÿก

๐Ÿชด Secure Loose Items: Store or tie down lightweight garden furniture, pots, and decorations to prevent them from becoming projectiles.

๐Ÿ… Harvest & Store: Harvest ripe produce and store it indoors. Remove hanging baskets to prevent them from swaying dangerously.

๐ŸŒท Stake Tall Plants: Stake tall plants to prevent them from toppling over. This also helps maintain their structural integrity.

๐ŸŒง Turn Off Irrigation: Turn off your irrigation system to avoid waterlogging and reduce the risk of uprooting due to saturated soil.

๐Ÿงฐ Stock Up on Supplies: Have garden stakes, ties, burlap, and other necessary supplies on hand for quick fixes post-storm.

Remember, a well-prepared garden can bounce back faster after a hurricane. Stay safe and protect your green space! ๐ŸŒฟ

Ever wonder what we do with the leaves we clean up? ๐Ÿ‚

All leaves collected during our autumn clean-up season are turned into leaf mould!

This is a cold composting process, so it takes about a year for them to be used. Here's why we choose to compost our collected leaves each year:

๐ŸŒฟ Sustainability: Leaf mould is an excellent organic material that can be used as a natural soil conditioner. By creating leaf mould, we can recycle organic matter, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers and contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly landscape management approach.

๐ŸŒฟ Improving Soil Quality: Leaf mould is rich in organic matter, which can improve soil structure and fertility. It enhances the soil's ability to retain moisture, nutrients, and beneficial microorganisms.

๐ŸŒฟ Reducing Waste: Creating leaf mould reduces the amount of green waste going to landfills or incineration, which is better for the environment. Decomposing leaves in landfills can produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By composting leaves instead, we contribute to waste reduction and environmental conservation.

๐ŸŒฟ Long-Term Benefits: Leaf mould releases nutrients slowly over time, providing a sustained source of nourishment for plants. This can lead to healthier and more robust plant growth in the long term.

This question has come up again recently, so we thought it would be a perfect time to share this post again:

Landscaping is the only industry where a professional installs a product and then says "Now, wait 3 years!"

When we work with our clients to design their gardens, we make sure to design around the plants for your space. This involves looking at the predicted mature height and width of various plant materials and the maintenance schedule that fits our client's lifestyle.

This causes a lot of confusion when the freshly installed garden looks less 'full' than expected after approving a garden design.

๐ŸŒณ Year 1: The plant material is just getting used to its new location out of a grower pot. Things look a little spaced out.

๐ŸŒณ Year 2: The plants are stretching out underground and getting comfortable. Starting to look a little more full.

๐ŸŒณ Year 3: Plants are now acclimated to their environment, they have made themselves at home. Now they're ready to start growing!

As long as the plant is left alone and not relocated regularly, the 3-year rule of thumb is pretty accurate. If you want to have a fuller garden before 3 years, you can always focus on fast-growing perennials or choose to have annuals installed for the first year or two.

When it comes to slow-growing shrubs and trees, we try to source them in as large a pot as the budget and environment allow.

While installations often look unimpressive when installed, we always design gardens to make sure they have the greatest chance of thriving in your spaceโ€”which protects our client's investment in their yard.

With Hurricane Franklin swinging uncomfortably close to the Maritimes this week, we thought it would be a good time to share our best hurricane preparation tips for your yard and garden. ๐Ÿ”– Make sure to bookmark this post as we expect a heavier storm season this autumn.

๐ŸŒ€Preparing Your Yard & Garden for a Hurricane ๐Ÿก

Trim & Prune: Trim weak branches and prune trees to reduce the risk of limbs falling during high winds.

Secure Loose Items: Store or tie down lightweight garden furniture, pots, and decorations to prevent them from becoming projectiles.

Harvest & Store: Harvest ripe produce and store it indoors. Remove hanging baskets to prevent them from swaying dangerously.

Stake Tall Plants: Stake tall plants to prevent them from toppling over. This also helps maintain their structural integrity.

Turn Off Irrigation: Turn off your irrigation system to avoid waterlogging and reduce the risk of uprooting due to saturated soil.

Mulch & Anchor Soil: Apply mulch to help stabilize soil and prevent erosion caused by heavy rainfall.

Prune Dead Growth: Clear dead or weakened branches that could break off and cause damage.

Secure Greenhouses: If you have a greenhouse, ensure it's well-anchored and reinforced against strong winds.

Stock Up on Supplies: Have garden stakes, ties, burlap, and other necessary supplies on hand for quick fixes post-storm.

Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather updates and follow evacuation orders if necessary. Safety comes first!

Remember, a well-prepared garden can bounce back faster after a hurricane. Stay safe and protect your green space! ๐ŸŒฟ

Pruning your shrubs and hedges, particularly in the late summer or early fall, offers several benefits for various types of plants and trees. Here are some of the specific advantages of September! ๐Ÿ‘‰

It's important to note that the timing and extent of pruning can vary based on the specific type of plant, its growth habits, and your local climate.

Not all plants benefit from pruning in September, so it's advisable to research and understand the needs of your specific plants before performing any pruning. If in doubt, give us a call to book your consultation!

With record-breaking rains over the past few months and more on the way, you may be noticing changes in your yard and gardens. Here are some of the reasons you may need to consider adding hardscaping to your outdoor space.

๐ŸŒฟ Prevent Erosion: Especially in places where water repeatedly flows after heavy rains or steeply sloped areas around the entry points of your home.

๐ŸŒฟ Create Space: If you have a heavily sloping piece of land and want to have a space safe for your family to play, you can use hardscaping to create a flat backyard.

๐ŸŒฟ Boost Curb Appeal: With all the materials available, you can create a centrepiece for your outdoor space.

๐ŸŒฟ Create levels: You can create entertainment areas separate from the rest of your backyard or navigate steep inclines by creating multiple levels. This leaves you with the option to add gardens and patios that work with your lifestyle.

We loved working with our clients on each of these projects. If you're looking to add custom hardscaping to your outdoor space, send us a message at https://thegardenerhalifax.com/ or give us a call to book your consultation.

Our teams have been busy all season installing our custom outdoor planters, so today we're talking about how to maintain an outdoor planter through the warmer months!

1. Avoid overwatering - Water only when your planters need it. Watering in the morning will allow the soil time to soak up the water it needs.

2. Proper drainage - Make sure your planter has good drainage to avoid root rot and use self-watering planters to maintain the proper moisture.

3. Place your planter where it will get appropriate sun. Most planters do best in full sun for those vibrant blooms, so make sure they're getting 6 hours of sun.

4. Pluck large leaves. Planters are layered, so it's important to make sure the sun gets to the smaller plants in your arrangement.

5. When in doubt, ask the pros. We're always ready to help.

Adding mulch to your garden is for more than aesthetics. Mulch can help your garden by reducing w**d growth (keeping the sun from reaching unwanted w**ds), keeping the soil moist longer on hot days and protecting your garden beds from washing away all that expensive topsoil in the rain.

Just remember during the long hot days of summer to give your gardens a long deep soak early in the morning to keep your gardens healthy all season long. Our favourites are black and natural cedar mulch for all of our client installations. Comment below with your preferred mulch!
