☝️Come take a look at Hamilton‐based Artist‐in‐Residence Brenda Reid's first time screenprinting at our studio! Follow along @brendamabelreid to see their progress! Have you tried screenprinting before? "First time burning images for screenprinting solo! Don't worry, have been trained by the awesome staff at @centre3_ . It's a goal for me to learn screen print (or silkscreening however you want to call it) during my residency. I'm working on a 2 colour print! Wish me luck 😅" Brenda Reid (they/them) is an emerging multidisciplinary artist and designer who works and lives in Kitchener, ON, on the Haldimand Tract, land promised to the Six Nations. Brenda’s practice explores care and spatial politics and the peculiarity of urban space. Their work often draws on historical care artifacts such as quilts and explores the role of softness in expressing care. The work uses art as a medium to have difficult conversations around ethics and the impacts of city-building and dwelling. Video by and courtesy of Brenda Reid. 👤 COMING SOON — Nichol Marsch: Subjects Main Gallery March 3 to April 7, 2023 Reception: Friday, March 10, 2023, 7 to 10 pm Subjects is a multimedia installation exploring the relation between statistics and the body. In this solo exhibition, Nichol Marsch @nichol.marsch.art presents a thousand handmade human forms that are repeatedly labelled, categorized, and statisticized. Made from fabric, paper, enamel, beads, stickers, plaster, ink pigments, spray foam, synthetic hair, yarn, french fries and other found objects, each subject is numbered and accompanied by a scannable barcode allowing access to their applied statistical information. Hundreds of Canadian and global statistics are applied to these subjects through techniques of stitching, slashing, paint submersion, and object-affixation. Statistical categories range from the general, such as gender, age, and weight, to the specific, chronic illnesses, projected cancer diagnosis, and the percentages of people who overpack for vacation or have a lucky pair of underwear. Nichol Marsch (she/they) is a Métis visual artist from rural Manitoba/Treaty 1 Territory. Working primarily in multimedia sculptural installation, her practice is self-reflective and explores concepts of social constructs, determinants of identity, place, and invariability 📸 Images: Nichol Marsch. Follow along Tong Zhou Lafrance discuss their series “Untitled Labour” from the exhibition Transpositions (Oct 14, 2022 − Nov 26, 2022, curated by @nburisch) at Centre[3]. You can also watch previous episodes on our YouTube channel. Link here: https://youtu.be/iaqxt1NTmI0 🔗 Tong Zhou Lafrance cuts and reassembles old family photographs, weaving narrow strips into shimmering quasi-pixelated surfaces that emphasize how personal memories and shared cultural forms are distorted through time and representation. Lafrance alters these images as a means to examine their experience as an adoptee from China. By pulling apart memories in order to put them back together again, Lafrance’s works show how different perspectives might coexist within a single frame. More specifically, they are interested in how the story of adoption unfolds past the original event, with a life ‘constructed’ through the lens of before/after. By reworking family archives they exert their own sense of agency across significant memories and moments. Transpositions is the final in a three-part series of exhibitions that explore connections between textiles and technology. Building on the preceding exhibitions Interweavings and Remediations, the artists selected for Transpositions offer an expanded understanding of textile construction. Using non-traditional media such as wire, rubber, photographs, or insulation they transpose the technologies of weaving or braiding onto their chosen materials. 🖼 Exhibition Highlight with Kathryn Killackey ✏️ Watch this latest Exhibition Highlight featuring Kathryn Killackey and her exhibition “Something from Nothing” from Oct 3 to Oct 29, 2022. Something from Nothing is a series of self-assigned drawing exercises, designed to break through artist block. They are based on the disproven scientific theory of spontaneous generation which hypothesized that nonliving matter can give rise to living organisms. Each exercise contrasts a detailed rendering with looser techniques such as graphite washes, rough lines, and paper scraps. Through the drawing process, the inert exercises quicken and become moments of transformation, reconciling the dichotomy of things within and out of our control. Disparate parts give rise to new wholes. Kathryn Killackey emerging artist with a background in archaeology and science illustration. My artwork addresses themes stemming from this background, including material culture, memory, transformation, and organic processes. I’m currently working on my Ontario Arts Council funded project Neighbors, a drawing series exploring nonhuman animals’ experience of urban spaces. 🎥 Video shot and edited by Arturo Jimenez @arttheboy.wav #Centre3 #Centre3MembersGallery #Centre3Exhibitions #ARC #ArtistRunCentre #ExhibitionVideo #HamOnt Ontario Arts Council City of Hamilton

Exhibition Highlights — Natalie Hunter: How dim died the sun, how far hung the sky Listen to Natalie Hunter speak about her exhibition "How dim died the sun, how far hung the sky" on view now till July 31st in our Members' Gallery. Here is an excerpt of Natalie describing the process making "Edge of Sky": "The large wall installation drapes, folds, and cascades across handmade armatures. The transparent photographs cast latent imagery across the wall, distorting and bending the images within. The entire installation is derived from rolls of 35-millimetre film. Each time I went out to run an errand during the pandemic, I photographed the sky using multiple exposures and colour films, while continuously rolling the film through the camera. The result is a series of continuous photographs that took many months to make. When lit — colour, light, and images are projected onto the wall, producing an experiential encounter for the viewer. The installation is durational in nature in that, depending on where the viewer is standing in the room, the images appear different according to their perspective. And depending on the time of day, or the lighting conditions, the installation appears different each time it is viewed." Exhibition Highlight — Kareem-Anthony Ferreira: Table, Manors In case you missed it, watch our Emerging Artist in Residence Kareem talking in detail about his artwork "Freedom to Want" which is featured in the exhibition "Table, Manors." You can also find an excerpt below: "In this particular series and throughout this residency at Centre[3], I have been focusing specifically on island print and island print fabric. I have been working with the idea of using island print as a specific trope or stand-in for the North American gaze of the Caribbean. So when you think of the island print, a lot of people instantly jump to the Caribbean as in the Caribbean cruises, tropics — but in fact, all the different islands are rich with their own specific cultures and peoples. And also when I think of the Caribbean and Trinidad, specifically — it is home for me and not necessarily an escape from home." And on top are pieces that you can remove and put in the booklet. These pieces have braille embossed on them and they can be translated into English. So it's a way for people who are sighted to learn English and for blind people also interact with art [with] this little kit — just being able to touch the work and inviting [...] blind people to come in and interact and be part of the community." Check out this walkthrough video led by artist K. MacNeil! @kit.macneil K. MacNeil: at-home apothecary, OR EXTRA STRENGTH + PAIN RELIEF" Members' Gallery at @centre3_ June 22 – June 30, 2022 At-home apothecary, or EXTRA STRENGTH + PAIN RELIEF is a six-year body of work incorporating painting, drawing, and printmaking. Pulling directly from my home and personal medicine cabinet, these works replicate and probe the various prescriptions, homeopathic remedies, texts, and even clothing used in an effort to find healing. At-home apothecary draws from lifelong management of depression, PTSD, gender dysphoria, and chronic pain, and personal experiences navigating support systems prevalent in Western society. From paintings of medications to drawings of used Q-tips, this work engages experiences of physical ailment, addiction, and mental distress and the ways these topics are both obscured and commodified in North American culture. Through these autobiographical works, I create space to question and critique ableist systems that stigmatize the chronically ill experience. Collectively, at-home apothecary, or EXTRA STRENGTH + PAIN RELIEF confronts stigmas surrounding illness and the messiness of healing.
