🫘 Chocolate comes from a bean called Theobroma cacao which is native to Mexico, Central and South America.

🗓️ The earliest record of using cacao is around 1100 B.C. in Central America.

☕️ For about 90% of chocolate's long history, it was only consumed as a beverage.

✨ The Aztecs and Mayans thought the beans came from the gods and had magical properties suitable for sacred ritual use. They consumed cacao by pounding the beans into a liquid which they drank without adding any sugar.

💰 These civilizations valued the cacao bean so highly that they used it as currency.

💬 The word "chocolate" stems from the Aztec word "xocolatl", which means "bitter water”.

👨‍🔬 In 1828, a Dutch chemist found a way to make powdered chocolate by removing half the natural fat (cacao butter) from chocolate liquor and then treating the mixture with alkaline salts to cut the bitter taste. His product became known as "Dutch cocoa,”.

🍫 Creation of the modern chocolate bar is credited to British confectioner Joseph Fry who in 1847 invented “eating chocolate” by adding melted cocoa butter back into Dutch cocoa.

🫘 Cacao beans are the size of an almond. It takes about 400-500 beans to make a bar of chocolate.

🌳 Cacao trees can live for 100 years, however they make viable beans for just 25 years.

🌍 Cacao was brought to Africa in 1822 and now nearly 70% of the world’s supply of it is grown there.

❤️ Chocolate contains powerful antioxidants and eating it can improve your heart health, boost brain function, reduce stress, etc. Most of the benefits found are with chocolate that has at least 70% cacao content - so reach for that high quality, dark chocolate when you want a treat!

Happy National Eat Your Vegetables Day! 🌶️🥕🌽🥦🥒🍠🍆

Nothing adds more colour and variety to your plate than veggies! And nothing provides you with essential vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients while protecting you from diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease quite like veggies! 💚❤️💚

Aim to eat at least 3-4 servings of veggies a day (serving is approx 1/2 cup for most veggies). And try to eat a few different colours for the most benefits (put a rainbow on your plate!! 🌈🍽️). Fresh is best but frozen is a great (and sometimes cheaper) option. Salads, stir fries, and soups are all great ways to get a variety of veggies in a meal!

While they could never replace my beloved chips or popcorn, I am a big fan of pretzels! (Especially peanut butter filled or chocolate-covered ones!) Raise your hand if you also love these twisted treats! 🥨🙋

Here are some Pretzel facts to snack on:

🥨 The soft-baked version came first. The story goes that back in 610 CE an Italian monk decided to create a treat to motivate his students. He rolled out ropes of bread dough, twisted them to look like hands crossed on the chest in prayer and baked them. The monk called them ‘pretiola’ which is Latin for ‘little reward’. 🙏

🥨 Pretzels were a part of Swiss wedding ceremonies in the 16th century. The bride and groom would make a wish, break the pretzel and each eat half as a symbol of their union.  💒

🥨 The biggest pretzel on record was about 29 x 13 feet in size and weighed over 1700 pounds! 😮⚖️

🥨 Do we have any Pennsylvania pals? Did you know that 80% of the pretzels sold in the US are made in your state?! 🏆

🥨 Unsalted pretzels are called ‘baldies’. 👨‍🦲

Some folks find bats creepy, however they're truly fascinating creatures that deserve appreciation! Check out some Bat Facts below! ⬇️

🦇 There are over 1,100 bat species. There are more species of bats than there are of any other mammals.

🦇 Bats make up a quarter of all mammals!

🦇 They range in size from as tiny as dime with a wing span of 6” (aww!) to as big as a small dog weighing 2lbs with a 6 ft wing span.

🦇 Bats are the only mammals that can fly.

🦇 The order name of the bat is called Chiroptera which means ‘hand wing’. Did you know that their wing structure is almost the same as a human hand?! 🖐️

🦇 70% of bat species eat only insects - of which they’ll eat their body weight each night. Some bats catch over 1000 mosquitos AN HOUR - so thank them for making summer nights more bearable. They also keep the moth population in check (moths which would turn into caterpillars which would feast on farmers’ crops).

🦇 Bats are important pollinators and play a big role in pollinating flowers and spreading seeds for plants / trees. If you're a fan of tequila, you should def appreciate bats as the agave plant relies solely on them to pollinate its flowers. 🌺

🦇 If a bat finds its way into your home, don’t freak out / try to catch / harm it. Just open a door or window and switch off the lights - the bat will usually find its way out quickly! 🪟

🦇 Sadly bats are having a hard time due to deforestation, pollution, killing, industry & disease. More than 50% of bat species in the US are either in severe decline or endangered. To learn more about them / how to help keep them around, check out organization fighting for them! ( )
