Meet DJ, a 2024 Continuing Care Assistant graduate!

DJ also happened to be the lucky winner of last year’s CCA-Win Your Tuition promotion and we followed up with her as she completed her program.

DJ has spent her life living in the area and was looking for a change after spending 10 years in Public Works and water treatment. Having always wanted to explore her interest in healthcare, she took the opportunity to start working at a care facility and came to Carlton Trail College to attain her credentials.

Winning her tuition was a great advantage for her and her family, which includes a husband and two littles at home. Her next steps are to continue working as a CCA and perhaps continue to advance into the field of nursing.

DJ’s advice to those looking to make a big change like she did is to “Trust that everything will work out! Making the switch from Public Works to Healthcare for me was scary, but everything worked out, there has been a ton of opportunity, grants, and other things that have been helpful along the way.”

For the final week of National Aboriginal History Month, we're excited to spotlight remarkable local initiatives that celebrate and advance Indigenous culture and enterprise in the area.

First, we have the AEC Business Club, a dynamic group of students from Almightyvoice Education Centre located on One Arrow First Nation in Saskatchewan. These talented students are making waves with their unique, one-of-a-kind artistic creations, showcasing their creativity and cultural heritage.

Second, we have the Punnichy Community High School Grade 9 Photography Gala. On June 3rd, the Community of Raymore and Punnichy celebrated the achievements of the PCHS grade 9 photography class. This was the first gala held for new emerging artists and students. The photographs were visible to the public until June 6th, 2024.

These initiatives not only enrich communities, but also play a crucial role in sustaining and promoting Indigenous cultures, offering inspiring examples of innovation and cultural artistic expressions by youth!

In 2015, the College purchased a former church building from the Village of Punnichy to establish a training centre to serve the growing education and training needs of adult learners in Punnichy and the surrounding area. After renovations to the building were completed, the Four Winds Learning Centre officially opened in 2017.

As a finishing touch to the learning centre, two talented local artists from George Gordon First Nation, Brent Fisher and Joe Pelletier, were invited to create an inspirational work that would adorn the newly renovated learning space. The resulting mural carries powerful symbolism and honors the surrounding First Nations communities as noted by the artists in their notes below:

The number 4 is represented and noted throughout the mural: 4 local First Nations, 4 spirit animals (each specific to a community), 4 Colors, 4 directions, 4 seasons.

The center medallion depicts education in a traditional sense - specifically Elders educating Young Ones.

The Bear signifies bravery: We may need to recognize that we are brave, especially in times that we feel alone.

The Wolf signifies teamwork: “For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack” – Rudyard Kipling

The sunset signifies the end of the day and knowing that tomorrow is a new day, a new opportunity, and a reminder to be mindful that nobody is alone. Although we may feel alone, if we look deep enough, we will notice that many people walk beside us and are often going through similar struggles as us.

The red and green in the eagle feathers represent the colors of the buffalo and eagle.

Brent Fisher also used colors to represent the following First Nation communities:
- Red – Mukowekwan – EAST – Eagle
- Green – George Gordon First Nation – SOUTH – Buffalo
- White – Day Star First Nation – NORTH – Bear
- Yellow – Kawakatoose First Nation – WEST – Wolf
