The Canadian government has spent $9.9 million on social media advertising campaigns for COVID-19 vaccines since 2020.

Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) spent a total of $4.6 million on production costs and $5.3 million on advertising for the 12 campaigns, which were posted to Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Tiktok, Snapchat, and Pinterest between 2020 and 2024. The information was revealed following an Inquiry of Ministry from Conservative MP Ted Falk published on April 8.

While the Liberal government says higher taxes in the 2024 budget are intended to make the super-rich pay for hiked-up spending, ordinary Canadians are going to be impacted as well as they sell real estate, stocks, and other assets, say financial experts.

Since the Liberals presented their financial plan on April 16, the hottest topic for economists, accountants, and ordinary citizens has been the plan to tax a greater portion of investment profits through the higher so-called “inclusion rate” on capital gains. The new capital gains tax starts on June 25, and many low-income earners expecting a one-time gain of over $250,000 are trying to decide whether to do it now.

Alberta has announced the largest water-sharing agreements in its history as one way to lessen the impact of what could be another severe year of drought.

The agreement means the biggest water users in the province, such as irrigation districts, municipalities, and industries, have voluntarily agreed to reduce how much water they use if the situation worsens.

“Many reservoirs are still low, and the ground is already dry from last year,” Alberta Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz told a news conference. “If we have a hot, dry spring, we still could see severe drought in parts of our province.”

MARKHAM, Ont.—The Toronto-area private school whose name came up prominently during the foreign interference inquiry for busing international students to the Liberal nomination vote of MP Han D**g in 2019 was invited to celebrate the Chinese New Year with the prime minister two years later.

The invitation was issued even as the prime minister and Liberal party organizers had been made aware of “irregularities” at the nomination vote by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in 2019. The cited issues included international students being told to support Mr. D**g under “veiled threats” by the Chinese consulate.

The federal government wants its carbon rebates labelled as such when they arrive as direct deposits in Canadians’ bank accounts.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said this week his government is looking at amending the Financial Administration Act to require banks to identify payments using the government’s wording rather than a more general label such as “Deposit Canada,” The Canadian Press reports.
In 2022, the first carbon tax rebates were labelled “EFT Canada” along with other more generic terms, which did not inform Canadians why they were receiving the money from the government.

A new report from the Fraser Institute casts doubt on claims that extreme weather events are becoming more common, arguing such assertions by governments and media outlets are not “iron-clad.”

“Many types of extreme weather show no signs of increasing and in some cases are decreasing,” reads the April 18 report, Extreme Weather and Climate Change.
The report warns that based on assertions that have not been proven to be true, governments have been enacting “ever more restrictive regulations” on Canadian consumers of energy products, which have imposed costs on Canada’s economy and its citizens’ standards of living.”

China’s Ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu has concluded his tenure, the department of foreign affairs has confirmed.

“Former Ambassador Cong concluded his posting to Canada (duration 2019-2024),” Global Affairs Canada (GAC) stated in an email on April 19. Yong Zhao has been appointed as chargé d’affaires ad interim.

Mr. Cong’s tenure coincided with the arrest of Huawei senior executive Meng Wanzhou and Beijing’s retaliatory detention of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. These incidents strained the relationship between Ottawa and Beijing, despite earlier efforts by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to seek closer ties with China.
