Day 10 – Bend & Stretch! The Big Five
One of our most favored lessons to instruct here at ACT during all of our composite technology courses is the ‘Basic Laminate Design’ lecture. We talk about and demonstrate the principles of anisotropic design and the thermal properties of materials. The big five: Quasi-Isotropic / Symmetrical / Balanced / Thermally Balanced and Nested laminates. From an applied-technologies viewpoint, we show how material properties can make or break a structure's design. Such as what happens to carbon fiber when it is subjected to rapid temperature changes, as carbon fiber has a ‘Negative Coefficient of Thermal Expansion’. For a better explanation, please watch the video. Answer to the question on Day 9: ZERO! That’s right, the gauge would read zero vacuum since the entire gauge is inside the chamber. Even with 27” Hg vacuum inside the chamber, there is no difference in the ambient pressure between the inside and outside of the gauge itself.

Marine Gelcoat Repair Techniques
DAY 1: Gelcoat Colour Matching for Marine Structures One of the hardest things to do is to match the colour of gelcoat on a weathered boat hull. From the Hue (the primary colours of Red, Blue & Yellow) all other colours can be created with gelcoat, just as with paint. When matching factory applied ‘White’ gelcoat, adding just a single drop of yellow pigment + a single drop of light brown pigment, will add the sun-faded ‘Undertone’ to the weathered white of the original manufacturers applied version of white gelcoat. Seen here in the video, ACT Lead Instructor and President, Wilson Boynton, has painted a swatch of the manufacturer's base white gelcoat on a weather-faded boat hull to illustrate the off-set colour difference after years of gelcoat exposure to sun and water.
