Don’t fall into your banks trap of trying to convince you to put your money into a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).
Here’s an example of TD’s GIC advertising and how misleading it can be.
For this specific GIC, the small print states:
“1. Actual return is 1.9623% per annum, compounded annually, payable at maturity (equivalent to 6.00% total return).”
“2. Actual return is 2.8357% per annum, compounded annually, payable at maturity (equivalent to 15.00% total return).”
As interest rates in Canada continue to drop over the upcoming months and years ahead, putting your money into a GIC is a very poor financial decision that will cause you to miss out on significant growth.
As of today, the stock market is +17.94% to start 2024.
Imagine locking in your hard earned money for the next 3 to 5 years at an annual return of +2.0 or +3.0% when inflation is currently +2.70%..
Be educated, not sold.
