Today is April 2nd and the kickoff to a month dedicated to Autism. Many years ago April was known as Autism Awareness Month, and now is often referred to as Autism Acceptance Month or World Autism Month. Whatever you call it, the key is to take inspiration to continue to learn and do more to support Autistic individuals to thrive. One of the ways we do this at CDP is to ensure that we are always learning from and listening to neurodivergent professionals and individuals with lived experience. Some of our staff had the opportunity to do just that with the awesome duo at this year and today we’re sharing their resource on moving from awareness to empowerment. It's available in many languages and can be used as a guide to finding your own personal next step. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1x-blxQ-rd70nzyz5qxWkGflB8q5WubW7

We’d love to hear about your journey!

An introduction to monotropism 12/21/2023

The DACS team is always learning more about Autism and how we can best support our clients. This month, we had the opportunity to learn with Kieran Rose, an Autistic person and Autism Professional. Kieran shared such valuable information to help us learn about the negative impact of older views of Autism on the developmental path of children, including the many factors that lead to Autistic Masking and Burnout. He also helped us to understand more about Monotropism, a theory of attention in Autism. Check out this video on Monotropism to share our learning journey!

Did you know that children as young as 4 can be diagnosed with ADHD? October is ADHD Awareness Month, so let’s chat about ADHD in young children. Preschoolers with ADHD typically struggle more than their peers with inattention, distractibility, tantrums and oppositional behaviour and this can result in difficulties in childcare or preschool. They may not have the skills that other children have to receive positive attention, so they are at risk for negative impacts on their self esteem. Young children with ADHD benefit tremendously from their parents and caregivers learning about ADHD and using specific strategies to support their development. To learn more, visit the CHADD - Children & Adults with ADHD website.

A Child's View of Sensory Processing 10/30/2023

October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month. Sensory Processing is the how the brain processes information from all of the senses and connects this information with what we already know about the world around us. It’s how we make sense of sensations! We loved learning from Neil, who shares a child's view of Sensory Processing.

What does your body need to feel good?

Today is tip-filled Thursday! Here are some things caregivers may do to encourage FOOD EXPLORATION:
• Include your child in preparing meals and snacks. Cooking and baking together with real food allows your child to explore food and see the different forms that foods take from raw to cooked or baked, with no expectation to taste the food.
• Encourage pretend play and books with food themes. Toy food exploration in play or looking at different foods in books may feel less overwhelming for some children and help introduce new options for food.
• Create food art together. Cut food to fun shapes or create faces using food. You might use blueberries as eyes and nose and banana slices as the mouth and ears on a piece of toast. This gives your child an opportunity to touch different foods and makes food visually appealing.

10/26/2023

Start with less! It is important to consider the right PORTION SIZE for each individual. When there is too much food on the plate, it may feel visually overwhelming for some children. Start small, and your child can always ask for more. Remember, the caregiver’s role is to make mealtime a positive experience and the child’s role is to decide how much they will eat.

It’s all about FAMILY MEALTIME ROUTINES today!

Family meals are an important time to model good eating habits and expose your child to different foods. Build a routine that is predictable and is separate from playtime.

10/24/2023

It’s FEEDING WEEK! Start your week with positive mealtime habits. Today, we’re sharing tips on mealtime roles and responsibilities for caregivers and children. It’s the caregiver’s role and responsibility to decide what foods to offer, when to offer meals and snacks, and where the child eats. It is the child’s responsibility to decide whether or not they will eat and how much they will eat. Respect these roles to create a safe and positive mealtime for your child.
