Evaluating Prospects for Vacancy Control Policy in B.C.’s Housing Affordability Crisis 09/14/2023

The Mission Youth Action Group welcomes the report on Vacancy Control from Dr. Daniela Aiello and Affordable BC as rental housing affects large portions of the population of young people in BC. We also welcome the call to directly involve tenants in housing policy.

Rent Control, and vacancy control, along with other policies targeting housing inequality would directly benefit the young people in our community who struggle with the current housing affordability crisis in the province.

Evaluating Prospects for Vacancy Control Policy in B.C.’s Housing Affordability Crisis This report argues that vacancy control is an effective and necessary policy tool for addressing the extreme housing affordability crisis facing B.C. renters. In effect, vacancy control ties rent to the unit and means landlords cannot hike the rent when a tenancy turns over.

Some quick 2SLGBTQIA+ history!

On this day, 4 August 1990, the term "Two-Spirit", for Indigenous people "who embody diverse (or non-normative) sexualities, genders, gender roles, and/or gender expressions", was adopted at the 3rd Annual Gathering of Native American G**s and Le****ns being held near Beausejour, Manitoba, Canada.
Teacher, counselor, administrator, mentor and elder, Dr. Myra Laramee (First Nations Cree) brought the term to a sharing circle of 80 Indigenous LGBT+ people from across North America at the 1990 Gathering, and it was quickly adopted.
As Harlan Pruden, the managing editor of the Two-Spirit Journal, put it: "[Two-Spirit evokes] the time before the harshness of colonisation where many, not all, First Peoples had traditions and ways that were non-binary, where some Nations had 3, 4, 5, 6, or even 7+ different genders and these genders were not only accepted and honoured but also had distinct roles within their respective Nations. Today, we would generally refer to these individuals as Two-Spirit.”
Pictured: We'wha, c1886. We'wha was a Zuni lhamana, who are people with typically male bodies who take on at least some social and ceremonial roles of women, and sometimes wear women's clothes. Some lhamana today identify as Two-Spirit.

Hello friends!

Updates for you all. We want to thank everyone for your continued support throughout the year! This year we have accomplished extraordinary things.

We are working on some exciting projects for 2023-2024, and for that, we need your help.

We are in need of some equipment such as a projector and screen for presentations to community stakeholders and programs. We have purchased a couple of low-cost projectors from Amazon; however, they do not operate bright enough for basic presentations.

If there are any community members who have a projector they are willing to part ways with, we would be forever grateful.

We are also looking for some sport/recreation-based organizations to support us on a new initiative we will bring to the City of Mission in 2023.

Music Bingo will return! We have a few tentative dates for events, and it will be fun! This event will be by donation (NO COST!!) and virtual (sponsored by Christine Allan - Re/Max Little Oak Realty and The Mission Optimist Club). If you have a small business and would like to donate prizes or sponsor a segment of the event, we would love to chat!

Have an amazing and safe holiday season, friends!

Mission Youth Action Group will be winding down operations for the next 2-3 months while Luca and myself adjust to returning to University.

We are appreciative for the support that the community has shown us, and we are looking forward to regrouping in a few months time.

We are always looking for donations as well as more people to join or volunteer, there is a need for youth assistance in this community and we are not gonna leave, so if you are interested in helping our team with programming or by volunteering at one of our events in the future; give Luca or myself a call by either messaging us on the page, privately through our accounts, or by texting one of us (my number is 778 900 4376; Luca's YAG number is 604 229 0359).

Here's to the future!
Obi (on behalf of Luca and the Board)

(P.S.) To be clear, we still will be doing things quietly behind the scenes, however we will not be as visible as before.

It's almost time for school, and that means back-to-school shopping!

We're now taking applications for sponsored school supplies (donations are NOT required, but are appreciated).

This program is designed for those who have a self-identified need for school supplies. Priority is given to those who are in Mission and for youth who are between 13-18, who self-identify as low income/going through financial hardship, and single parents/young families. We do go through all applications and we will do our best to fulfill all requests, but we can only go while supplies last.

School supplies are expensive; to be transparent we have currently invested just over $1,600 into this program and we anticipate that we will have to spend more to assist more. We've received grants from Walmart to aid us in purchasing supplies, but we have a large need that has not yet been met.

If you're a local business looking to sponsor the most inclusive school supply program in the lower mainland please reach out to us at [email protected] or send us a message to our page. We would love to work with you and have you as one of our sponsors!

Thank you from the Mission Youth Action Group!
