Support the empowerment of girls in Canada, organized by Courtney Murdoch 07/08/2022

With a new year of youth programming fast approaching, we are excited to announce the launch of the first annual Between Us Girls fundraising campaign! 📢

During our pilot year, we implemented successful programming including CV development workshops, confidence building activities, public speaking exercises, participated in important discussions about the lived experiences of girls and women in today's world, and launched a youth-led entrepreneurial initiative. Between Us Girls participants experienced an increase in sense of leadership ability, capacity and skills, and awareness of opportunity and how to access it 🌟

We feel strongly that girls across Canada will benefit from this programming, and with your help, we can make that possible 💛 Donate now! https://gofund.me/19d81fe8

Happy ! 👩‍👩‍👧‍👧

Today, take time to think about how you define power, what it means to be a leader, and how you speak about women's success. While there is definitely room for improvement in the statistic included here, it paints a much brighter picture of the reality of women’s progress than many of the numbers we are used to seeing and shows us that women can and do lead!

invites us to and work towards a more equitable society that values and celebrates diversity. Tag a woman who you admire below and tell us how she inspires you and forges a better world! 💛

Navigating youth-led and gender-specific facilitation 02/28/2022

I've learned a lot over the course of this year, and I'm excited to be working on a project with Pathy Foundation Fellowship alumna, Nicola Rae (Thrive: "Like a Girl"), and current Fellow, Emily Booker (), on a facilitator's guide that will make our practical knowledge and experience available to all facilitators interested in working with female and femme youth!

Make sure to follow us so you don't miss the launch in late-spring! 🤩

Navigating youth-led and gender-specific facilitation As I’ve developed Girl Talk and plans for future programming and services, maintaining a youth- and participant-focused lens has been front of mind. My previous work with youth had all been somewhat prescriptive – following a curriculum with varying degrees of flexibility that a team with no kno...

Girls Uniting Across Canada to End Gender-Based Violence 12/06/2021

Today, on The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the fourteen young women who lost their lives in the Polytechnique Massacre on December 6th, 1989. This day serves to honour and remember victims of gender-based violence and as a call to action against all forms of gender-based violence around the world 💛

We teamed up with to develop a collaborative project for the girls in our groups, asking them to share what they wanted their communities to know about girls’ and women’s safety.

📰 Read all about the experience and takeaways in our new blog post: https://www.girltalkcanada.ca/post/girls-uniting-across-canada-to-end-gender-based-violence

Why do we need girl-only spaces? 11/30/2021

Why do we still need girl only spaces? 🧐 This week’s blog post explores the needs that these environments address for today’s female-identifying youth, and explains the benefits that female-centred programs provide for their participants! Check it out right here 💛

Why do we need girl-only spaces? In a world that tells our girls that they are too much and not enough, these spaces create a place where they can learn that they are exactly right.

Women of the Wars 11/09/2021

As Remembrance Day approaches, take an extra moment to remember the contributions and sacrifices of Canadian women throughout history. These women took on many critical roles in the war efforts, and made huge strides for gender equality on the home front. To read more about these women, read our new blog post here. Lest we forget 🤍

Women of the Wars On November 11th at 11am, the nation will fall silent to remember those soldiers who died in battle in the First World War, the Second World War, and other conflicts since. These moments represent the end of the First World War on the 11th of November 1918 – 103 years ago. On November 11th, we oft...

Normal, reimagined: Lessons from the return to school in 2021 11/03/2021

As we get settled in to a new school year, it's time to ask what the "new normal" in the public education system should look like!

Read about some reflections from the return to school in 2021 in our new blog post: https://www.girltalkcanada.ca/post/normal-reimagined-lessons-from-the-return-to-school-in-2021

Normal, reimagined: Lessons from the return to school in 2021 In many ways, March of 2020 feels like a lifetime ago. In many ways, it was. These past nineteen months have also felt like a lifetime of talking about the “new normal”, which quickly became a buzz phrase that would either bring an awkward tension to a conversation, cause a heated argument, or e...

A big focus through the month of October has been thinking about where we are and where we want to go, and asset mapping is central to that effort! 🌟 Pictured here is a Girl Talk participant who engaged in an adapted version of the Building Assets Toolkit, developed by the Population Council. Working in small groups, participants considered the age by which girls like them should have the capacity to do certain things or take on certain roles. This excercise helps facilitators understand the needs of the girls in their community, engage different viewpoints, and build concrete and meaningful programming for adolescent girls! So much amazing learning and discussion came out of this activity 🤩

09/21/2021

Yesterday, we hosted the first ever Girl Talk meeting with a fantastic group of girls who are eager for the experience and growth that this year holds! As the construction of Girl Talk will be very participatory, the group had one big question to answer: What do you hope to get out of this year?

The answers to this question will inform program design, implementation, and ideal outcomes over the course of the year. Each girl was given a cue card, a pen, and a few minutes to sit and think about the outcomes that were most important to them. Their responses were incredibly valuable and highlighted many of the complexities and challenges of today’s adolescent experience. With awareness being brought to some of the topics that are important to Girl Talk participants, it’s time to start planning!

Welcome to Girl Talk! 💛

Girl Talk: Building our Future is a gender empowerment initiative through the Pathy Foundation Fellowship which works with female-identifying youth in underserved communities and aims to offset the impacts of gendered brilliance bias and other anti-female biases through extracurricular programming in the public education system. Over the course of the year, participants will develop leadership, entrepreneurial, and communication skills, build confidence, and set themselves up for the lives they want after high school.

This year has big things in store and we can’t wait to share all of it with you! ✨
