Automatic Audio
Hand-crafted horn-loaded loudspeakers built to order in Montreal, Canada.
We’ve just wrapped up our first full year as a tax paying business, and we have so much to be grateful for. We just sealed and delivered these Barbaras to the Old Port, and the Clovers are headed to Newfoundland!
This time last year, we were hammering away in an 8’ x 12’ room surrounded by rehearsal spaces — the roar of our power tools battling with neighbouring guitar amps and drum kits. Through your support, we quickly outgrew that space and are now operating in a 650 square foot wood shop, with upgraded tools and local legends as shop neighbours ( ). Working to increase output while maintaining our quality standards, we’re training new builders so that built-to-order doesn’t mean wait-for-ever.
With high-efficiency, horn-loaded, big-box Automatic Audio speakers scattered not only across our city, but across the country, we can’t wait for you to see what we’ve got planned for 2024.
came to us looking to solve the complaints they were receiving about their loud dining room and it working against the experience they were working hard to provide.
This is a problem we are well aware of! Having worked around restaurants for years prior to building speakers, this was the reason we designed Frida in the first place.
Top-shelf, high efficiency drivers in a 3-way horn-loaded system means seamless sonic clarity that blends effortlessly into every table’s conversations. A stiff pour that goes down easy! Sound panels stretched by our shop neighbour Zeke over at cut down on the overall echo in their dining room.
We absolutely love accommodating special requests from our clients, and are very pleased with the two tone stain job on these Fridas: blue sidewalls and clear finish on the baffles. The combination matches their original raw plywood decor, while the blue ties everything together by accentuating the natural beauty of the Douglas Fir material.
Took a walk around our building with these rebuilt 1983 Klipsch Heresys finished in ‘cotton candy’, a secret blend of stains created by Mackenzie, our newest builder!
If you’ve got a vintage pair of loudspeakers that need some love, bring them to us for the AA treatment.
Barbara is back. New and improved, this is MkII. JP reached out after our much needed month off and we were more eager than ever to build. After a demo of the prototypes, he fell in love with Barbara’s magic.
Coming off of our biggest installation to date with Vino Disco, the momentum of energy brought us back to the drawing board after focusing on developing Bean, Frida, and Clover. Those builds gave us the opportunity to hone our craft, and our return to building Barbaras had to reflect this growth.
Barbara grew 7” — bringing the tweeter and midrange closer to ear-level. We split the high and low frequency into separate cabinets, added a third oval radiator to the taller bass enclosure, doubled the 15” woofer’s baffle thickness up to 1.5”, redesigned the midrange horn and bracing.
With JP requesting a Le Cléac’h horn in black gloss, Cherry stain on the Canadian Douglas Fir, custom grills, and subtle but classy light tortoise shell, this build was tailored to him head to toe.
For this build we were inspired by our quest for the finely tuned, inviting sound of our first speaker — the Barbara prototype, the speaker that inspired us to start this business. This pair has us energized to keep growing. Here’s to the pursuit of sound that melts you into your couch while you rediscover your music collection.

These 5’ tall Red Oak horns were developed, designed and built by the AA team for and for their new wine bar ‘Vino Disco’ opening soon in downtown Montreal.
Custom AA enclosures lock and load Renkus-Heinz ICL-F towers. Founded in 1979 by Harro Heinz and Algis Renkus, the company’s initial success stemmed from their ability to rapidly develop and build custom loudspeakers in-house. The initial tower design included a horn on the baffle, but due to budget constraints, they excluded the horn from production. The rich heritage of Renkus-Heinz inspired us to bring that engineer’s vision to life.
After dozens of digital models, we picked up the timber and got down to it. 200 kerf cuts, multiple runs to Home Depot for more clamps, and a crushed thumb later, we were looking at our largest build yet.
These beasts are now in the hands of the Vino Disco crew to be painted by .30000 before going up in their new space later this summer. Supported by 3 pairs of Beans, Fridas, and Clovers, the sound system will be Automatic Audio from wall to wall. Thank you for the trust on this one boys! 🙏
We are proud to introduce our new professional application loudspeaker: FRIDA ☀️
This prototype is wrapped up and dialled in. Featuring curved horns lined with tortoise shell loading a 5” midrange woofer, a ported 10” coaxial driver outputting deep bass and crisp highs, Frida is designed to sit high up and flush on the wall. Its ultra-wide soundstage turns the whole room into a sweet spot, ideal for public spaces. Most importantly, Frida’s high efficiency design renders clarity at low volume so your guests don’t have to get into a screaming match with your soundsystem.
Designed for restaurants/bars/clubs, built with care by pawns in the food service industry. Sun’s rising folks. Don’t sleep in. Get in touch! 🌞
Horn-loaded loudspeakers are making a comeback.
Bean is our skilled little soldier trained to give a discothèque, bar, restaurant, or home seriously precise and fulfilling audio support. Position a pair vertically to party, or suspend them horizontally and get down to business.
Denis's cork grill design and Luc's trucker grill design.
Partly inspired by old tube guitar amplifiers from the 50s. We love seeing the bounce of the woofer, so no cloth. Just wooden slats to protect these pro drivers from whatever you got running around your house. No messy velcro. No cheap clips. Strong magnets to hold it down when your whole house is shaking. 🤘
