Bairrada: Dirk’s great passion

Bairrada belongs to the Niepoort triangle of Douro, Dão, Bairrada.

“I’ve always been passionate about Bairrada. Douro aside, this was the first region I made wine in, between 1992 and 1996, and I fell in love with it.”

Dirk relies on Sérgio Silva, Quinta de Baixo’s Winemaker, and on his own son Daniel to make this dream come true. Daniel Niepoort is the 6th Niepoort generation in the business and is as much a believer in Bairrada’s success as his father.

The purchase of Quinta de Baixo was a great challenge, which made it all the more important to create something special, typical of the region, but with the NIEPOORT soul.

Bairrada has always been a difficult region, but we believe it has the potential to be the birthplace of elegant and delicate wines that are also full of character.

The Bairrada region has a cool and damp climate, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, leading to grapes that are high in acidity and low in alcohol. The soil is clay and limestone or sandy and white grape varieties such as Maria Gomes, Arinto, Bical and Cercial have amazing potential there. Baga is the predominant red variety and is the backbone of most red wines in the region.

Dirk is doing what he likes the most and today his wines are better than he ever dared dream. We want the world to know Niepoort’s Bairrada wines!
