We had an eventful Friday here at Norwood Nature Academy when we found a baby owl on one of our trails. Thanks to the guidance of and we were able to make sure the owl was injury free and get them back safely in a tree for their mom to find.
Another day here without power in Norwood. Just reaching out to our community hoping everyone, their animals and property are ok after the storm on Saturday. We have a generator running and extra room in our fridge if anyone in the community needs something charged or fridge/freezer space to store food for a while. ❤️
Let’s talk about the benefits of exposing children to animals. Being around and caring for animals allows children to develop skills such as empathy, compassion, confidence and responsibility.
Students at Norwood Nature Academy are exposed to dogs and chickens daily and we hope to add even more animals to our crew soon!
Our dogs join us on our forest explorations, and students gather eggs and help care for and snuggle our chicks and chickens. One of our chickens has even learned that snack time with kids means crumbs and treats for her! 🤣
Heading into a week of beautiful weather, I have to say I’m going to miss seeing the kiddos snuggle together under blankets for their favourite stories. Do you and your kids love to read outside?
Enjoying our first week that truly felt like spring! The week was filled with finding, identifying and sorting forest treasures, picnics, welcoming our new baby chicks (thank you !), and beautiful long hikes finding new places we had yet to explore!
Check out our summer camp openings on our website.

Norwood Nature Academy Norwood Nature Academy is Peterborough County's newest forest school, also called a nature school. At forest school children learn through outdoor education. Check us out for more information on how forest school will benefit your child.
Maple syrup season is beginning and I have had the best helpers this week getting our trees prepped. Can’t wait to share this experience with the kids and end the season with a pancake lunch with maple syrup they helped make!
Let’s take a minute to talk about risky play. Something that is slowly being eliminated from the traditional school environment. Kids are no longer allowed to climb snow piles, slide on the ice, toboggan, and most of the other fun activities that winter brings for children. With the elimination of risky play comes the elimination of the important skills it provides our children.
Here sliding on the ice these children are learning and judging their own capabilities, moving their bodies in different ways and gaining body awareness, building gross motor skills, making quick problem solving decisions, using their brains in new ways, building their confidence, and just having the BEST time!
Our snow got a whole lot brighter this week! The kids are loving writing in the snow, mixing new colours, and decorating everything in sight!
