Over the past two years, students have faced tuition hikes, pandemic mismanagement, and rising rent and food prices, all while job markets are becoming increasingly uncertain.

Since the passing of Bill 124, which in the past 4 years has effectively been a wage freeze, the wages of our professors and school staff have been lagging further and further behind inflation. As they continue to be overworked and underpaid, the added pressures of hybrid and remote learning have left the quality of postsecondary education to rot. Meanwhile, over the past 6 years, college executives across the province have increased their average income by 92% and the Ontario college system generated close to $1.5 billion in budget surpluses. It is clear that the livelihoods of our teachers and the education of our students is not a priority for the CEC and the Boards of Governors of our public colleges. Under capitalism, students and teachers must fight tooth and nail for every scrap of workplace democracy and against austerity.

There is no way forward for education under capitalism. The only solution is to stand up against the tyranny and incompetency of college bosses, and place our schools in the hands of the people who are actually involved in our communities: our schools’ staff and students.

Students must come to the support of their teachers in whatever way possible; we should fight alongside them to show the CEC and the Ford government that we will not tolerate further attacks on our education!
