🤝🏼business partners🤝🏼
As some of you already know, Gavin and I were classmates at Fanshawe College where we both earned our Advanced Diploma’s in Massage Therapy. We have been registrants with the CMTO and small business owners since 2021!
Building our clinic and collaborating these past few months has been so rewarding and we are so grateful and appreciative of the response we have been getting from our clients! Just wanted to take the time to thank you for instilling trust in our practices and your on-going support 🫶🏼
Catch you in the clinic!

Massage is no longer a luxury!
I always ask new clients when their last treatment was and far too often the response is “I’ve never had a massage before” or “a couple years ago”. While some see massage as a luxury, I urge more people to view massage therapy as a necessity that your body requires on a regular basis. The more often you receive treatment, the easier it will be to maintain good health.
Many health insurance companies now have great RMT coverage as it has become more prevalent amongst people to seek massage as they realize how necessary regular massage therapy is.
This is your sign to incorporate massage therapy into your self-care routine! 💆🏻♀️

Factors that Affect the Healing Process🤕
Below is a more in depth explanation of each contributing factor!
😰Severity: a severe injury where more tissue is damaged will take longer to heal
than a mild injury where there is little tissue damage.
🧓🏼Age: in older adults, there is a slowing of fibroblast production and wound contraction. Characteristics of collagen and elastin fibres
change. The skin loses its ability to hold water and becomes thinner.
🦠Infection: results in poor healing as it causes an increased inflammatory response and increased local tissue necrosis which will impair wound healing.
🥗Nutritional support: good vitamins and minerals from food are required for an adequate healing process.
🤒Existing conditions: conditions such as diabetes have associated vascular problems as well as causing an increased susceptibility to infection.
🩸Inadequate blood flow interferes with the local nutritional needs, removal of toxins, bacteria and debris and may be the result of edema.
🩹Wound separation: open wounds with a large gap will heal slower than smaller wounds.
💊Effects of some drugs: steroids inhibit the inflammatory process, collagen synthesis and, in turn, the healing process.
🚭Smoking: smoking delays healing and interferes with the actions of certain drugs.

Celebrating 1 year in business 🎉
Choosing to start my own massage therapy practice in the midst of the pandemic was scary to say the least. I remember feeling incredibly hesitant and foolish to start up a business that required touch when being 6ft apart was the new norm. Fast forward to one year later and am I ever glad I didn’t let these insecurities sway me away.
I am so fortunate I was able to bring my massage therapy services into my brothers business .athletedevelopment and have our own family business for the last year. Thanks to my dad for building me the perfect room and to my mom for helping me accessorize it 🥰
The response I have received from everyone who has come to my practice has been incredible. It has been a pleasure getting to meet and provide my services to each one of you. I feel so grateful that you can open up and share your story with me and allow me to be apart of your health and wellness journey and be a practitioner you can trust. Thank you for instilling your trust in me and I will continue to provide the upmost quality care you deserve for years to come.
Starting your own business is incredibly challenging, humbling but very rewarding and I’m so glad I put all my energy and sincere effort into doing so.
Thank you to my clients for your loyalty, my friends who believed in me when I didn’t and my family for your endless support in everything I do.
To many more years to come! 💆🏻♀️
☀️Back in clinic Monday May 16th! I will be accepting bookings for the last two weeks of May and into June!

🩻 Anatomy of the Spine 🩻
Often times in practice I will refer to various spinal segments and try to educate my clients on the anatomy and segments that make up the spine!
It can be tricky to visualize, so I created a simple illustration of the segments that compose the spine!
The spine is composed of 33 bones (vertebrae) that are divided into 5 sections:
• Cervical Spine:
- Connected to the base of the skull, this section is responsible for mobility and normal functioning of the neck, as well as protection of the spinal cord, arteries and nerves
• Thoracic Spine:
- Located at chest level, the thoracic vertebrae are labeled T1 to T12 and serve as attachment sites for the rib cage
• Lumbar Spine:
- Situated between the thoracic spine and the sacrum. The five lumbar vertebrae (L1 to L5) is the main weight-bearing section of the spinal column
• Sacrum:
- This spinal section does not have discs separating the vertebrae as seen in the sections above. This is because S1 to S5, are fused together and where the pelvis connects to the spinal column
• Coccyx:
- The very base of the spinal column and is made of 3-5 (varies) segments that are fused together
Hope this basic overview of the spine can help you understand the anatomy of the spine a little bit better! 🤓 (big anatomy fan!)

🥵 A very common misconception is that massages need to hurt to work, which is completely untrue!
😌 Massages should always be within your tolerance and RMTs may refer to a “pain scale” during a treatment to ensure sure you are never in pain.
💬 Open communication in regards to pressure throughout the treatment between you and your RMT is essential. Do not feel embarrassed to speak up and ask for a different pressure!!

🔴What your cupping colours tell you🔴
🤕A common misconception is that cupping bruises the skin. It’s important to understand that the circular marks left behind with cupping are not bruises. Bruises are caused by direct trauma and impact that breaks the capillaries in the injured area.
🛎There should be no compression or impact with cupping. Cupping will do the opposite, as it will lift and draw the skin, fascia and muscle upwards into the cup.
🩸The marks left behind are a result of an increase in blood flow brought to where the cups have been placed. The darker the mark, the more stagnant blood flow is and also an increase in fluid in that area (blood, toxins, lymph). These areas are typically also where muscles can feel tight and achey.
🗓The marks can last 1-14 days post treatment. The more often you receive cupping for the same issue, the area should get lighter, meaning blood flow is unblocked/circulating better by cupping therapy.
💦It is also important to note you may experience mild tenderness post treatment. Drinking plenty of water and stretching/range of motion activities are beneficial after a cupping therapy treatment as this further helps circulation.

💀Muscles of Mastication💀
The primary muscles include:
• Masseter: the prime mover in elevation of the mandible (closing the jaw/clenches the teeth) Did you know because of the leverage it develops on the mandible (jaw), many consider it one of the strongest muscles in the body!
• Temporalis: acts to elevate and retract the jaw
• Lateral Pterygoid: is the only muscle of mastication that helps open the jaw
• Medial Pterygoid: muscle most responsible for lateral deviation, needed for chewing (shifting the jaw side to side)
😬Clenching from stress, grinding of the teeth at night, and chewing gum are a few examples that can lead to tightness & myospasm in these muscles. Muscles of mastication may be associated with tension headaches and TMJ dysfunction.
💆🏽♀️Massage therapy can help decrease trigger points in these muscles, improve range of motion in the jaw, and decrease pain!

2022 Goals 🎯
Listed are a few of the courses I wish to take in 2022 to further expand my knowledge and expertise in such fields!
👶🏼 infants are a demographic I wish to cater to and provide treatments for this year. Paediatric massage can help your baby feel relaxed, which may improve their sleep!
🩹athletic taping was always something I benefited from playing hockey, so I would love to take a taping course to provide the same benefit for the athletes I treat!
😬 TMJ Dysfunction is a common condition I have seen in my practice so far and a condition I have great interest in. I would love to expand my manual techniques for the jaw.
🦴joint mobilizations is an effective technique to decrease pain and increase range of motion in axial and peripheral joints. I would love to keep learning different approaches in joint mobs to add to my practice!
⛑ healthcare practitioners are encouraged each year to renew our First Aid HCP Certification. I plan to renew this in 2022 as it is super important to remain vigilant and up to date with First Aid & CPR.
I hope you can hold me accountable to these goals!
