Okotoks Pride
We have come together to bring Pride events and resources to the LGBTQ* Community in Okotoks and the surrounding area.
This page represented a committee of like-minded organizations, community groups, and individuals who are dedicated to the visibility of the LGBTQ* Community and Pride in the Foothills. Thank you for following along and helping to bring visibility to the diversity of our neighbourhoods. After much thought and discussion, it has been decided that Okotoks Pride will be archived until the local Community is once again in a space for the levels of growth, philanthropy, and collaboration that were the initial vision of this committee.
Moving forward, several individuals will be focusing on separate endeavors to ensure Pride is always visible and accessible in the Foothills. Efforts to recover organizational assets will also continue so Okotoks Pride is ready to bring everyone together when the time comes to get Loud and Proud again.

“One Of A Kind Kid: A Journey With ADHD” is a new children’s book from Calgary author, Nancy Anderson.
Nancy Anderson is the mother of a son who was diagnosed with ADHD at six years old. She advocates for more understanding around ADHD and hopes her book One of a Kind Kid will raise awareness about the disorder and the importance of understanding it. While we are personally always excited to see the continuation and growth of Pride, regardless of who is hosting it; as an organization who believes in transparency, we need to clarify a couple points that keep coming up:
Okotoks Pride is not affiliated with True Colors Rainbow Alliance, nor their takeover of Okotoks Pride Week 2024.
True Colors is not a ‘rebrand’ or ‘off-shoot’ of Okotoks Pride or Foothills Rainbow Connection.
Some of our former board members left and started their own group.
The aforementioned members resigned when questions were raised about a co-chair’s conduct and a youth program.
Said members claimed all funding and felt entitled to take it with them.
Many of the sponsor and partnerships they’ve ‘formed’ predate their involvement with the Pride movement in Okotoks.
No formal handover happened with the exodus.
We have still not been granted access to Okotoks Pride’s bank accounts, which should at minimum have some funds remaining from protected sources but we have not been able to verify that, and cannot comment further on the matter at this time.
All financial maintenance has since been made personally by the remaining members.
A couple other board members resigned for personal reasons. Two more board members have yet to resign or confirm their involvement.
While we are just three people with active lives, we are still committed to remaining engaged to ensure Okotoks will always have a not-for-profit Pride group.
We are currently focused on building up High River’s Pride presence and supporting their endeavors, which we encourage everyone to check out.
We had the option to battle it out for Pride space in Okotoks, but that’s not an energy we want to encourage in this Community.
We unequivocally wish Okotoks a happy and safe Pride Week, but for absolute clarity, we are not, nor have ever been, involved or associated with True Colors Rainbow Alliance or any programming they have planned.
If folks would like a low-key BYOS get-together to happen in Town this summer, please let us know.
Happy Pride Always,
The Okotoks Pride Committee

Have you visited Viola yet? We have saved Viola Desmond's seat at the for the month of February! Together with this Cinema we choose to save the VIP seat for all of in memory of her sacrifice and to ensure that we will never discriminate on who can sit in the VIP seats at either of our screenings.
At BGC Foothills Clubs, the values of Inclusion & Belonging are enshrined in everything we do. Please know that you are a valued member and your authentic self is embraced! You are welcomed and respected for exactly who you are! Our doors are open to you and in our spaces, you are celebrated! Our commitment to providing equitable opportunities extends to everyone, regardless of how you identify, because we know that .
While we can't endorse all the organizations listed in the letter, we do appreciate and acknowledge how important and special it is to have this level of support from the municipality and a growing network of local groups.
Not sure if y'all remember how the first Pride way back in 2017 had to be hosted with a private event permit and didn't get endorsement from the Town. Actually, we operated as Foothills Rainbow Connection back then because we had been asked to not even use the word Okotoks in our name or event branding. What strides we've all made since!
Needless to say we are passionate about this being a safe town for everyone and are glad to see the Mayor is too, not that there was ever any doubt 😉💖
Last week, the provincial government shared that in the coming months, they will be implementing new policies related to health, education, and sport for Alberta children who identify as transgender. Please know that no matter who you are, where you come from, how you look, or how you identify, know that you are welcome here and are such an important part of our community fabric. My full statement is here. ⬇️
Applications will be accepted until Feb 29! Visit our website to apply.

Pride started as a riot. 😤 54 years ago today, the now iconic Stonewall Inn in New York's Greenwich Village was raided by police. Such raids were common, but on June 28, 1969, the 2SLGTBQIA+ community decided enough was enough, and so the Stonewall Riots began.
Resistance was led by two transgender women of colour, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. These two icons and their brave actions helped to spark a whole new era. They inspired 2SLGTBQIA+ communities in New York, the wider United States and beyond. ❤️
The uprising eventually led to the first Pride March, which set off from the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1970. Thank you to Marsha, Sylvia and the many others who took great risks to stand up for what is right. We must continue to build on their legacy. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
