Yesterday we attended the AGM where Melissa Belliveau was awarded the Honourable Justice Bryan Shaughnessy Award for her outstanding contribution to the practice of family law through her career. Congratulations to all the award receipts and thank you to DRLA and our fellow colleagues for such a well attended and inspiring night.
Last week Melissa Belliveau was awarded with the Ontario Ministry Volunteer award with Lukes Place as a volunteer of over 15 years. Thank you for the resources you provide to Women facing intimate partner violence.

Charges Dropped
Our client found herself charged with assault and mischief because of having too much to drink. She hired Sean Simeson at KSB, who immediately began fighting for her. After the Crown finally understood the evidence against her was weaker than they anticipated, the charges were dropped. If you are charged with a crime in Ontario, please contact us.

Meet Sean Simeson, Sean graduated from McGill University in 2010 with a B.A. in history/political science and in 2014 with a J.D. from Lyola University New Orleans College of Law. Sean was admitted to the Colorado Bar and has practiced in Denver for the past nine years specializing in Personal Injury, Criminal, Civil Rights, Workers Comp, and General Civil Litigation. Sean was admitted to the Ontario Bar in July 2022 and has continued his practice in those areas here in Durham Region. Sean is an avid lacrosse player and loves his dog Froyo and his wife.
Meet Melissa Belliveau, partner of the firm. She has practiced family law and employment law for over 16 years. She joined KSB in 2007 as an associate lawyer and became partner in 2012. She graduated from the University of Guelph in 2003 with a BA in Criminal Justice and Public Policy and graduated from Queen’s University Faculty of Law in 2006. She was called to the bar in June 2007. Prior to joining KSB she articled at a large civil litigation firm in downtown Toronto.
Melissa is a member of the Legal Advisory Committee at Luke’s Place and volunteers there as a Pro Bono lawyer in their legal clinic. She is also a Pro bono Lawyer Supervisor with the Family Justice Centre and is the Chair of the Gala committee for Grandview Children’s Foundation. Since 2016 Melissa has been a member of the Durham Collaborative Law Association and is a Dispute Resolution Officer with the Oshawa Superior Court of Justice. In January 2022 Melissa launched her Family Law mediation practice after completing her Certificate in Family Mediation through York University. In this new venture she will utilize all of the knowledge gained through her years of litigation and negotiation in order to assist parties in reaching an outcome that best meets the interests of the parties and speaks to the best interests of the children.
Meet Al Simeson, he is the founding partner of Kitchen Simeson Belliveau. He has been practicing law since 1984 after graduating from the University of Western Ontario, (B.A.Honours), University of Waterloo, (M.A.) and the Law School at McGill University, (LL.B). Al is in charge of personal injury litigation at the firm and has many years of experience representing and fighting for the rights of innocent accident victims and winning just compensation for these individuals. Al also has extensive experience in commercial, real estate and construction litigation. He has been actively involved in his community by sitting on various boards and community organizations and assisting in coaching minor hockey and minor lacrosse. Al is a former President of the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and former Chairman of the Canada Pension Plan Appeals Tribunal.
