May 17th is International Day Against Homophobia Transphobia and Biphobia. đłïžâđđłïžââ§ïž
Itâs time for and recognition of the fundamental human rights for all.
Prior to settler contact, Indigenous Peoples had diverse interpretations of gender and sexuality. There was a shared understanding that individuals could hold many expressions of gender and Two-Spirit peoplesâmeaning people who hold both masculine and feminine spiritsâwere embraced and valued. They held important roles as teachers, knowledge-keepers, healers, herbalists, child minders, spiritual leaders, interpreters, mediators and artists.

Today we celebrate Indigenous peoples across turtle island. Today recognizes the contributions and cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples to the history of turtle island.
As youth, one of the best ways we can celebrate and contribute is by learning our stories, speak to family and elders, learn as much as we can to pass on to future generations. Youth of today will become the leaders of tomorrow.
Take the day and celebrate our identity, our resiliency, and our strength.
Today we celebrate our friends, family, and loved ones. Today we support those in the LGBTQQIA2S+ community and strive to be partners and allies by taking time to learn and educate.
Through love and understanding we can work to end homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.
Please check out our website for more information and to learn how to join the rainbow allyship public workshops being offered through May and June.

Since the First World War, Canada has taken part in major conflicts across the world in both combat and peacekeeping roles. In each of these roles, there have been Indigenous service members taking part front and center. Today is dedicated to recognizing the contributions and sacrifices indigenous veterans have made to Canada's war efforts and peacekeeping missions over the years. We remember and honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and we are grateful and thankful for those who continue to serve.

Today is an opportunity to learn, listen, and reflect on the deep, enduring, and positive impact First Nations, Inuit, MĂ©tis, and Urban Indigenous peoples have on culture, community, environmental protection and more. We honour all the lives lost and those impacted by the discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves on the grounds of residential schools, and recognize there is much work that needs to be done to truly move towards reconciliation.
