OCI KEY POINTS
1. Last Indian passport has to be surrendered before you can apply for OCI.
2. Name on OCI application should exactly match with Canadian passport.
3. Photo & signatures upload is mandatory. Thumb impression in case of kids in lieu of signatures. Right hand thumb for girls & left hand thumb for boys.
4. The photo you are uploading & the physical photo that you are submitting should be same. Shoulders should be visible in the photo.
5. Minor's application has to be signed by both parents on the last page.
6. Marital status is mandatory on the application.
7. Parent's & spouse name should match exactly with last Indian passport.
8. Canadian address should be complete with city, province, country & postal code.
9. Relationship with ROOT INDIAN - if the applicant has surrendered his/her last Indian passport then the relationship will be SELF. If the applicant is born in Canada then the relationship will be either Father or Mother( depending on who has the Indian passport. If both parents have Indian passport then you can use either of them)
10. Details of Indian Relative & Indian address is mandatory. You can give details of siblings, parents, grandparents, uncles & aunts. At least one person's details are required.
11. Marriage registration date is the date on which marriage was registered. It may be different than date of marriage. Check this date on your marriage certificate.
12. All supporting documents have to be self attested. Both parents should self attest minor applicant's documents.
13. Make sure to attach full checklist with your application.

Kids born in Canada/ USA to Indian parents/parent who are on any status(visitor/ student/ worker/ PR/ Green Card) are also eligible for OCI. As long as you have a valid status & proof of address in Canada/ USA, your kid is eligible for OCI.

In view of recent ongoing slug-fest between Canada and India, we feel it is important to clear some things for all Canadians interested in travelling to India.

1. All kind of new visas are suspended. India is not issuing any visa. No E-Visa. No Emergency Visa. Period.

2. If you have an existing still valid Indian Visa, you can travel to India.

3. Canadians who still have valid Indian passports, can use these to travel to India. India is still honouring three months grace period. There is no penalty if you travel in this grace period. Make sure that you take your Canadian Citizenship Certificate with you. You will need it for getting exit permit from FRRO and also applying for Canadian passport (if you don't have it already). You have to exit India on Canadian passport. You cannot exit India on your Indian Passport. This travel will be a one time thing as your Indian passport will be cancelled when you get exit permit.

4. Canadians who have travelled to India earlier on Canadian passport and now wish to travel on their Indian passport should avoid it, or travel on their own risk, as there are high chances of being denied entry by Indian Immigration. Indian Immigration may have their details that they have travelled earlier on Canadian passport.

5. OCI/valid PIO holders can travel to India without any restrictions.

6. New OCIs are being processed without any delay(for now).

7. All consulars services are still functional, such as PCC, OCI, Passport renewal.
