Are Unions a Force for Progress? Unions and Canadian Politics
Are unions a force for progress? Should unions intervene in politics outside their workplace? If so, why? How? This webinar will offer a critical assessment of union politics in Canada, past, present, and future. I will make the case that unions are indeed a force for progress, not just in the fight for better workplaces and financial security for working people, but in the fight against sexism, racism, homophobia, and other forms of hate and discrimination, and the fight for a better world for everyone. But unions are also a reflection of the society around them. They are not immune to the lure of more conservative or reactionary politics, especially when there are jobs at stake. What does this tension mean for unions, and for the many, many Canadian workers who are not members of unions? The ways in which unions intervene in our politics are in large part a consequence of the internal politics of those unions themselves, encouraging people to take an interest in the labour movement and see it as an agent of positive social change.

For Better and Worse: the Problematic Past and Uncertain Future of Marriage
Everyone knows that marriage isn’t what it used to be, and everyone is quite right. But there’s a lot more confusion about exactly what marriage used to be, when it used to be that way, and why it used to be that way. Stephanie will talk about some of the myths about "traditional" marriage and as well as some of the misconceptions about what is happening with marriage today. She argues that there were three distinctive marriage systems that emerged successively in history, each of them very different from the current rearrangement of marriage and family values we are experiencing today. We can then explore recent trends in marriage and new research about what makes for a good marriage and what predicts divorce, along with debates over whether to promote marriage and how to understand the impact of alternative family arrangements.

Intentional Communities: One Model for Nurturing Human Connection
While we may be members of many communities (family, work, neighbourhood, etc.) out of necessity, intentional communities create a safe experience of belonging, purpose, and shared values for us. In them, each of us encounters who we are and what our gifts are. In this conversation, we’ll explore one model of an intentional community called the Market Square Connected Community. It is being created among residents living in a condominium complex in downtown Toronto. We’ll explore the evolution of this community and practical suggestions for developing an intentional community wherever you reside.

Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis

This talk will summarize the assessment findings of the Working Group I contribution to this report, which addresses our understanding of the climate system and its response to human influence.

Reinventing an Old Technology to Deliver Communication Justice in Africa
On a continent where literacy rates average 66% for those over the age of 15, according to the World Bank, and where misinformation remains a real challenge, getting good information is easier said than done. But what if there was a medium that not only resonated with those living in Sub-Saharan Africa but also promoted communications rights and ensured the representation of different voices? That’s where we turn to the (seemingly) old-school communication technique that you have sitting in your car: the radio. By combining this long-trusted technology with innovations in mobile applications and phones, millions of Africans get access to good information to make the best decisions for themselves – and we want to tell you why this works, and why it matters. Join Kevin Perkins, the Executive Director of Farm Radio International as he unpacks how radio is a force for good in Sub-Saharan Africa, how it changes lives, and how it improves outcomes for millions of people.

Architecture of a healthcare system for Canadians
Canada ranks comparatively low in healthcare effectiveness despite relatively high public and private spending. Access to primary care is problematic, emergency department utilization is high, and those departments are crowded providing care in hallways and waiting rooms; if admitted to hospital, patients remain gurney bound for hours and days, and 15-20% of acute care hospital beds are occupied by people no longer requiring acute care, awaiting home, transitional or long-term care. Wait-times for specialty interventions in both pre- and in- pandemic times remain long. Mental health and addictions care is complex and opiate deaths remain in the thousands. Canada needs a radical restructuring of all elements of care delivery and could benefit from the experience of other jurisdictions that spend less for better outcomes. Dr. Walker will describe further the complex challenges currently faced by patients, families and providers and suggest different approaches for the future.
