Happy new year everyone!

New Year’s Eve tends to be a time to reflect on the year just past but I’m taking you back a decade or so instead. MaryAnn’s brother Paddy was visiting her a couple of evenings ago and in amidst the music he was playing for her he included this old song written by Fred Eaglesmith. She smiled as it played and he said he could see her fingers moving as though she was playing her mandolin.
With us on the song are pals Kenny Heinz (sadly passed on now) and Greg T. Brown on fiddle.
“I Wanna Buy Your Truck” is about yearning for a change in one’s life and for many of us that’s something we think about at this time of year. For my part, I look forward to a time when MaryAnn can switch from air mandolin back to actually playing her instrument again—with all the other physical improvements that would entail.

MaryAnn Harris has been in the hospital since September 6, 2021. She is recovering from Powassan virus, an extremely rare tick-bourne illness. In order to make a full recovery and go home (which her doctor believes is possible), she needs significantly more therapy than the Canadian healthcare system can provide.

Charles & MaryAnn have spent their lives reaching out to all of us through words and music and conversation and acts of kindness, through their creativity and heart, their generous spirits, and their dedication to putting light out into the world. I’ve been writing full-time for more years now than I can remember and consider myself extremely lucky to be able to do just that. With my wife MaryAnn at my side we’ve been able to pay the bills with our indie-produced books. But lately, with MaryAnn’s debilitating illness taking a chunk out of my time and *all* of her time, it’s taking much longer to get books edited, proofed, cover art done and just written. Unfortunately, the bills keep rising, ignoring how circumstances are at the moment. They don’t, as my musician friend Brock Zeman says in one of his songs, give a good goddamn.
So I’ve come to Patreon.
What will you get by supporting me here? Portions of forthcoming novels, unpublished stories, some songs, some poems, some art, some pictures of our pup Joey Strummer, possibly some deleted scenes or unfinished material. The books and stories will eventually appear elsewhere but you’ll get to read and enjoy them long before anyone else.
I’m hoping your patronage will give me some breathing room as I care for MaryAnn and tell more stories. And I’m hoping that we can build a community.
