It is with profound sadness that the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA) announces the passing of Graham Pawlett, a revered and dedicated member of our community. Graham served as the Past President of the CVFSA, where his leadership and vision were instrumental in advancing our mission.
At the time of his passing, Graham was serving as the CVFSA Director for British Columbia, where his commitment to the safety and support of volunteer firefighters was unwavering. He also represented the CVFSA on the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) National Advisory Council (NAC), contributing his expertise and insight to national discussions on fire services. Additionally, Graham was a key member of the CAFC Cancer Prevention Committee, passionately advocating for the health and well-being of firefighters across the country.
Graham was a firefighter for over 30 years with Port Moody Fire Rescue, demonstrating remarkable dedication and bravery in service to his community. He also worked as an Occupational Safety & Health Specialist with Air Canada Jazz, where his expertise and commitment to safety extended beyond the fire services.
His legacy is one of dedication, leadership, and an enduring commitment to the fire services community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Graham's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
The Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA) is thrilled to support the launch of the Indigenous Fire Service Award Medal by the National Indigenous Fire Safety Council (NIFSC). This initiative is a significant step in recognizing the outstanding dedication and service of Indigenous, Inuit, and Métis firefighters who have devoted over 10 years to their communities.
We believe that honoring these brave individuals with this prestigious medal, and additional bars for every 5 years of continued service, not only highlights their commitment but also inspires future generations to pursue a path of community service and protection.
The national implementation of this award, beginning with the ceremony in Kahnawake on July 14, 2024, marks a historic moment for the Kahnawake Fire Department and all Indigenous firefighters across Canada. We encourage everyone to support this meaningful endeavor and join us in celebrating the extraordinary contributions of these firefighters.
For more information and to request the service medal submission form, please contact [email protected]. Together, let’s honor the heroes who safeguard our communities.
