Sitka Oil Tank Removal Ltd.
Oil Tank Removal and Soil Remediation Services.
Who put that there? Aboveground storage tanks that are no longer in use will need to be removed (not just pumped out) due to home insurance requirements no matter where the tank is located or how much work it would be to remove as this homeowner had come to find out. Planning and careful ex*****on took care of this one.
Fill pipe (capped) and a vent pipe. Two visual indications an underground storage tank is buried on a property.
Oil burning hot water tank from the 70’s. There’s something you don’t see everyday day.
AST removal from a mid 60’s home. Out of sight out of mind original build installations back in the day make for interesting removals today. Also pictured is the single copper feed line that was run from the tank to the furnace room before the basement slab was poured which was also common practice for aboveground storage tanks of that time period. It was later ruled against code to have the AST located inside of home whether it was a crawl space or basement.
A visual indication a home has or did have a buried underground storage tank are two copper feeder lines buried in the slab of the basement that surface near the location of the furnace. Typically found on homes built before 1965, the lines may daylight coming through the foundation wall as pictured before diving back into the slab or may only be visible at the furnace location. The lines are typically found cut and capped or cut and hammered flat to the slab.
It was an absolute pleasure working for the seller of this home. It’s always enjoyable getting to know someone and hear their stories. Clean UST removal, clean site. Smiles all around.
The diameter of a fill pipe for an underground storage tank can vary but are most commonly 2 1/2” - 2 3/4”. When in use the fill pipe would have had either a threaded cap or plug depending on the style of appurtenance. This threaded pipe of unknown origin documented in the photos was found plugged and required further exploration due to several factors found during a site visit that could not be overlooked. Although the original consensus was leaning towards it not being a fill pipe for a UST verification by removing the concrete around the pipe and finding the pipe terminated 18” below grade put the purchasing party’s mind at ease.
-11 onsite today. I thought we lived on Vancouver Island? ❄️
Textbook UST removal. Being able to work in a tee shirt at the end of November isn’t so bad either.
Sitka Oil Tank Removal Ltd. offers ferromagnetic oil tanks scans and accompanying documentation for homes that may have at one point in time had a UST buried on the property. Homes built prior to 1965 should be considered suspect for buried underground tanks. Have questions? Give us a call!
This aboveground storage tank was hidden away under the stairs inside this 1960’s home in Nanaimo. The homeowner had started the job and we came in to finish it off.
Calm before the storm in Nanaimo today.
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🍂
During the course of a soil remediation project it is common to have to remove and replace services such as perimeter drain, sewer and storm sewer lines and waterlines. If a service needs to be removed it’s reinstated with an “as good or better” mentality using new materials.
This AST was located under an addition that was built off the original foundation of the home. The removal required taking up the floor of the storage area to gain access to the tank.
Another professional AST removal providing the documentation required to the homeowners to access the provincial and federal grants.
Abandonment in place was common practice for underground oil storage tanks on Vancouver Island throughout the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. The practice of abandoning tanks was banned in the 90’s and the removal of the tank in its entirety was put into practice. Tanks that had been abandoned when done correctly mitigated the potential for contamination but did not solve the problem all together. A tank that has been abandoned will still be required to be removed and the surrounding soils tested by an environmental consultant to verify the site is free and clear of contamination. Sitka was up island today to remove this AST that was neatly tucked away on the property. Upon inspection the bottom of the tank was found to be pitted and rusting from the outside in and was not far from failure. The homeowner made the right call having the tank removed when they did.
