Wild Sage, (prairie sagewort) is a traditional and sacred medicinal plant to indigenous peoples. This aromatic herb is not something I pick aside from when I am making smudge sticks for my husband. The best time to pick them is late July to mid August, however it can be picked later if the weather is good. If deciding to puck later, or if your harvesting for the winter, make sure to pick plants that have secondary growths on them and if there are seed pods, pick the top of the pods off and place back into the ground. Then puck the plant at the base, but do not remove the roots. For the most aromatic scent,pick before the seeds emerge. Sage can be used in a traditional manner such as sacred ceremonies and smudging. There are also many medicinal uses as well such as lowering blood sugar and cholesterol.
