Indigenous Joys Artist, Darla Campbell is back with a teaching. Traditional hide tanning, with brains! Indigenous people have used brains to tan and preserve hide for centuries, creating water-resistant, soft hide. Brain-tanned hide has a distinct smokey smell, which we would argue, is one of the best smells on earth. Thank you, Darla for sharing your knowledge. ❤️

The first residency artist for Indigenous Joys, alongside Tenille Campbell is... Darla Campbell! Darla Campbell is Plains Cree from Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation, SK in Treaty 6 Territory. Darla is a mom of 3 boys, an LPN for 10 years, and is also an accomplished hide tanner. She currently facilitates with kâniyâsihk Culture Camps, which is a family run land-based camp that strives to revitalize Indigenous language, traditions and culture. She is married and loves to spend most of her days outdoors with family, and moose hides as well as baking, as a self-taught cake baker.
