The Short Cuts Festival

The Short Cuts Festival

A fast paced, annual festival of short, never-produced-before plays. In 1990, the company premiered Yvette Nolan's acclaimed first play, BLADE.

We're interested in developing the work, and working with playwrights to develop their craft in a professional environment. The Short Cuts Ten Minute Play Festival occurs annually in Saskatoon and showcases world premieres of approximately six ten minute plays performed by an ensemble group of actors. The Short Cuts Festival is produced by Hardly Art Theatre, On The Boards Staging Company, and The

Happy anniversary, Short Cuts!

Our first ever festival began on April 10th, 2014. Were you there? Do you remember it? Can you believe it’s been eight years?!

Jo: Hey Grumms, are you familiar with the knee play?

Grumms: Why yes, but I’d love to hear it explained again!

Johanna Arnott (director) and S.E. Grummett (performer) are bringing to life Antifa Supersoldier by Caleigh Crow. This play will be presented in short bursts between the other six plays of the evening. It functions as a joint between two plays, hence the name: knee!

We have tried to add more shows to the schedule, but it is not possible for us to do so this year. Our priority in the theatre is keeping everyone safe by maintaining distance between groups, therefore, we cannot add any additional seats.

The fact that all three performances were sold out in 3 hours after the On The Boards newsletter went out simply fills us with so many feelings: appreciations for the support of the community, sadness that we cannot do more to accommodate more people seeing these fantastic plays, and a mix of joy/overwhelm/grief/confusion at being back in a theatre again.

It has been a wonderful ride and we are confident that this year, year seven (!!), is the best one yet. See you this weekend!

Thanks Brit for picking us! Also lovely to revisit our 2016 festival through the Shaw News video linked in the article. We are so happy to be in our seventh year- how time flies!

SHORT CUTS NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Do you remember dot matrix paper? The paper with the perforated edges and holes? We are looking for some! We don’t need a ton- if you have any to spare we would sincerely appreciate it.

Please share far and wide!

Last year Short Cuts went online. In May of 2020, we had a lot of questions about what the future would hold. This year, we still have a lot of questions, but we are much better prepared to meet and work in person.
The return to live theatre is slow, incomplete, and faltering. Rules change, comfort levels change, audiences change. To have made a live show, and to have sold out in a matter of days, is significant right now. An achievement. A celebration. We are wanted here. You are welcome here.
We’ve missed you. It’s time to shake off the dust and bring out the ghosts- Short Cuts is back, live and in person, on stage at The Refinery. Thank you for your support and we will see you at the show.
All three performances are full, but it is still possible to get on our waiting list. Visit ontheboars.ca/events
