All approved vaccines are safe, effective and prevent serious illness. It is much safer and more effective to get immunized for COVID-19 than it is to get infected.
Vaccines make our immune systems stronger by building antibodies to prevent and fight off disease. The three vaccines used in Alberta use different mechanisms to get the attention of the immune system:
➡️ Moderna and Pfizer use mRNA technology to teach cells how to make a protein to trigger an immune response and make antibodies to fight COVID-19. This does not alter your DNA.
➡️ AstraZeneca uses a viral vector vaccine, a harmless common cold adenovirus, to teach the immune system how to recognize and fight the real virus.
None of these vaccines contain the whole virus that causes COVID-19.
All of the vaccines require 2 doses for full protection.
If you haven’t gotten your first or second dose yet, book an appointment today: alberta.ca/vaccine
If you got an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) for your first dose, you should get an mRNA vaccine for your second dose to become fully vaccinated, but it doesn't need to be the same brand.
Both Pfizer and Moderna are considered interchangeable so book the first appointment available.

Today is World Pneumonia Day.
Pneumonia alone kills more than 800 000 children every year, accounting for 15% of all deaths of children under 5 years old. It’s the single largest infectious cause of death in children 🌍.
