One aspect of our bodies that slows down during this season is our "Digestive Fire". πŸ”₯ In TCM, the Spleen is responsible for warming and transforming our food into Qi (energy). When the Spleen is strong and balanced, digestion is smooth and healthy, and the immune system is strong. For this reason, we call the Spleen the "Digestive Fire". As we move from the peak Yang energy of summer into the Yin energy of winter, the "Digestive Fire" of the Spleen can slow down. Think of the Spleen like a pot on the stove. When the flame on the stove is burning as it should, it will cook foods more quickly if they are already warm or room temperature. If you put cold or frozen foods into the pot, it will take a lot more time and energy to break down these foods. If the flame is already weakened (from chronic stress, worry, too much work and too little rest), it will take even longer. In order to keep digestion flowing smoothly, choose warm, cooked foods, instead of cold & raw foods. Prioritize rest, eating regularly and proper portion sizes. Manage stress and worry. Acupuncture can be helpful in improving and regulating digestion πŸ“Œ Book yourself a tune-up appointment if you feel like you need some extra help with your digestion this season! As we move toward autumn, Yin yoga is the perfect practice to incorporate into your self-care routine. πŸ‚ Yin yoga is based on traditional Chinese medicine philosophies and the same principles as Acupuncture. By deepening into yoga poses, you can both target deep connective tissue like fascia and ligaments, and also open up any blockages along energy meridians. ✨ It can also be very meditative as you hold poses for longer, and it teaches you to sit with and breathe through discomfort. πŸƒ Book yourself in for some acupuncture to help your body stay in balance this season – call the clinic at 780-904-5006 or use Book Now button on our page to book online. #YinYoga #LungHealth #Stretch #Breathe #Yin #TCM #AcupunctureRocks #SGAcupuncture #SpruceGrove #StonyPlain #ParklandCounty #YEGHealth

In Chinese medicine, each season is associated with an organ, element, emotion, and there are certain food and lifestyle elements that we recommend to incorporate (or avoid!) to keep your body at its healthiest. As we approach Autumn, our focus turns to the Lung organ system, the element of Metal, and the emotions of grief and sadness. πŸπŸ‚πŸπŸ‚πŸ We are coming into a season of transition; from the Yang energy of summer – excitement, expansion, and growth – to the Yin energy of winter which represents contraction, looking inward, and rest. Throughout this month we will share helpful information about the Lungs, and how to keep yourself in balance as we move into Autumn. πŸ‚ #Autumn #Lungs #Yin #NaturalWellness #TCM #AcupunctureRocks #SGAcupuncture #SpruceGrove #StonyPlain #ParklandCounty #YEGHealth

Some tips to help you make the most of your acupuncture appointment βœ… 1️⃣ Have something to eat before your visit, but not too much. Acupuncture activates the rest & digest mode in your body! 2️⃣ Make sure you have plenty of time in your schedule. Resting on the table with the needles in is a big part of your treatment, and we take our time with intake to make sure we’re providing you with the treatment you need each time! 3️⃣ If you need to hit the gym, or have other strenuous activities planned, try to do these before your visit. We recommend no alcohol, drugs, or overexertion for at least 6 hours after your appointment. Drink LOTS of water after! 4️⃣ If needles make you nervous, please let us know! We are happy to do what we can to help keep you comfortable. 5️⃣ Consistent clients are happy clients! Book your next appointment before you leave, as each treatment builds on the previous. Wellness Wednesday Acupuncturists and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners aim not only to treat your allergy symptoms, but they investigate the root cause of the allergy too. ☯️ Acupuncture treatment helps relieve allergy symptoms like nasal congestion or runny nose, and it also helps to regulate the immune system to reduce the severity of the reaction. By looking at the body as a whole system, acupuncturists are able to address the root of the allergy, instead of just "fixing" symptoms. 🌎 If you're in need of an acupuncture tune-up, give us a call at 780-904-5006 or book online at www.sprucegroveacupuncture.com/schedule #AcupunctureForAllergies #AcupunctureRocks #SGAcupuncture #Prevention #AllergyRelief #SeasonalAllergies #AllergyTips #HayFever #SpruceGrove #StonyPlain #ParklandCounty #YEGHealth #TCM #ChineseHerbs #HolisticWellness #NaturalRemedies

Did you know that dark circles under the eye are often a sign of allergies? πŸ‘€ Sometimes called "allergic shiners", these dark areas can be caused by nasal congestion, a common allergy symptom. Nasal congestion can lead to congestion in the small veins under the eye. The blood pools in this area, causing puffiness and dark circles. Indoor and outdoor allergens, food allergies, cigarette smoke, pollution and other irritants that cause nasal congestion can lead to these allergic shiners. Sleep problems are more common in people with mental illness, than in the general population. There is a mutual relationship between sleep and mental health. We know that poor sleep can raise the risk for developing mental illness, and poor mental health can cause sleep problems. Sleep disruption wreaks havoc in the brain, affecting levels of neurotransmitters and stress hormones, which results in impaired thinking and emotional regulation. Did you know that we can treat insomnia and other sleep problems using acupuncture? By treating the sleep issues, practitioners can also improve mental health. Insomnia is a sign of imbalanced qi, and acupuncture can help restore the normal flow and balance of qi. We can also suggest other modifications to your lifestyle, habits, and diet that may help improve your sleep quality and mental health! If you struggle with insomnia or disturbed sleep, book yourself an acupuncture appointment for help. Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week, and we're going to continue that conversation this month. πŸ’š In any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental illness, and by age 40, 1 in 2 have or have had a mental illness (from CAMH.ca). For those struggling with mental illness, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can be helpful additions to treatment with medication and counselling. There are many acupuncture points on the body that can help lower stress and calm anxiety, including some that you can use at home with acupressure. πŸ‘‰ Here's one of our favorites: The Liver 3 point, or Taichong, located between your first and second toes, can help keep you grounded and get out of your head. Slide your finger between your big toe and second toe until you feel the tender spot near the junction of the bones. Press a finger to this spot with gentle but firm pressure, and hold for 3 minutes. You can find information about a couple more acu points on our blog at https://sprucegroveacupuncture.com/3-acupoints-for-anxiety/ If you need a tune-up for your mental wellbeing, book yourself an acupuncture appointment by calling us at 780-904-5006 or online at www.sprucegroveacupuncture.com/schedule πŸ“Œ #AcupunctureForAnxiety #Acupressure #AnxietyTips #AnxietyRelief #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #Anxiety #Depression #SGAcupuncture #SpruceGrove #StonyPlain #ParklandCounty #YEGAcupuncture #YEGHealth #SpruceGroveMoms #SpruceGroveFitness #TCM #ChineseHerbs #AcupunctureForHealth #AcupunctureWorks
