SUSTAINABILITY - BANANA PLANT FABRICS.
The Future Fabrics Expo is the largest dedicated showcase for sourcing certified, sustainable material solutions. This year, the banana plant emerged as a source for multiple material uses; upcycling what would typically be discarded as waste from the banana tree. These uses include:
- Banofi, a plant-based leather alternative
- Fiiba, a woven fabric designed as an alternative to cotton and viscose
- Bananatex, a canvas fabric made from Abacá, a banana plant
- Green Whisper, which mixes extracted fibres from harvested banana tree trunks with organic cotton to create a biodegradable fabric.

INSPIRATION - THE GRAND PALAIS RESTORATION.
Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, many areas of Paris underwent renovations, construction, and additions to accommodate hosting the athletes, spectators and sporting events that descended upon the city in July and August. The restoration of one iconic Parisian landmark, the Grand Palais, played a significant role in the 2024 Olympics.
Originally constructed for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the Grand Palais restoration began in 2021, addressing areas of neglect and fragmentation to improve public access, increase natural daylight, and reconnect the palace with its urban surroundings. With the full restoration set to be completed by 2025, the initial phase allowed several Olympic events, including fencing and taekwondo competitions, to be hosted–breathing new life into this historic venue.
THE NEW NEUTRAL
A versatile – and surprisingly elegant – hue is making its way into fashion, interiors, and decor alike. As the ‘quiet luxury’ trend grew over the past few years, so did the prevalence of beige as a colour go-to. Now, there’s a new neutral that designers are reaching for in a warmer, more flattering colour palette.
Tones of brown, especially the chic taupe, is on the top of every designers ‘it’ list. With the flexibility to range from bold and striking to soft and welcoming, it’s easy to see why we will be seeing much more brown in our fashion, furniture, and interior design in the months to come.
Brown, especially taupe, is the new beige in interior design, and it is easy to see why. Reminiscent of velvety cocoa, a mid-brown taupe is a striking color for any room. Depending on the furniture and accent colors introduced alongside, it has the flexibility to range from looking neat and tailored to soft and welcoming.
SUSTAINABILITY-
WOOD BIOMATERIALS
Using a range of salvaged sawdust and woodchips from production at a sawmill in Denmark, Danish firm Natural Material Studio has repurposed the previously discarded leftovers to create four uniquely different materials, with very differing properties.
Using three methods to combine the sawdust with natural binders, the four biomaterials explore the potential of using wood waste to make building materials – including a flexible textile, insulation, Japanese shoji screen-inspired semi-translucent sheets, and a structural wood fibre panel for architectural use.
By prioritizing utilizing the whole tree, the newly created biomaterials build value into the residue, moving away from the thinking that only parts of the tree are premium wood.

BOOKSHELF WEALTH
A trend we’ve watched develop and grow over the first half of 2024 has been the growing presence of cozy, lived-in interiors that feature an abundance of personal details. “Bookshelf wealth” as an aesthetic is not about creating a perfect display, but rather embracing the collection of books and decor for a feeling of warmth and homeliness. This idea of a tastefully eclectic, loosely organized bookcase or accent shelf is a great continuation of personalized design that can make a space truly unique.
Calvin by Lebom is the classic armchair shape, with one unique twist to reveal what is usually hidden. Nearly invisible to the eye from the front profile, the sleek base support grows from the floor to wrap around the exterior of the armchair, effectively cradling the upholstered seat in an aesthetic and visually interesting frame.

Each year, the Interior Design Show (IDS) celebrates and promotes Canadian design. Encompassing everything from emerging designers to legacy brands, IDS creates a total design experience, where industry leaders and aficionados can immerse themselves in all things interior design.
This year, a common throughpoint was how designs remained firmly rooted in inspirations from the northern landscape. From a stylish take on traditional log cabins, to a charming chair that took cues from a beaver, many designers and studios let their Canadian inspiration really shine through.
SUSTAINABILITY: SOIL BRICKS
Being closely tied to the manufacturing of products, forging a path through sustainable practices is always on our radar.
The acronym PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) refers to a large group of chemicals that are widely used to make items including non-stick pans,
umbrellas, and waterproof mascara. These “forever chemicals” are now known to be toxic, which means they do not break down in the environment when
they leak into our soils and waterways.
Startup Claybens is aimed to eliminate PFAS chemicals from contaminated clay soil by firing it into bricks. Utilizing a standard brick manufacturing process, ceramics are heated to 900 and 1,200 degrees Celsius in a kiln, destroying the PFAS chemicals to the point where no trace amounts are detectable in the
final product.

INNOVATION - IMMERSIVE
October unveiled the opening of the doors at the MSG Sphere Las Vegas - an entertainment venue billed as the world’s largest spherical structure. Featuring a 15,000 square metre wrap-around screen, the opening concert displayed bespoke artwork visuals by designers and artists. With most of its interior (and the entire exterior) covered in giant LED screens, the interior screen wraps more than 180 degrees around the viewer to create an immersive spectacle of epic proportions.
COLOUR TRENDS FROM SPAIN
During his visit to Spain in September, our Regional Dealer and A&D Sales Manager, Les Garai, got a preview of the newest products from our Spanish manufacturer, ACTIU. At this time, the brand also shared upcoming trends (colours, textures, and materials) we can expect to see incorporated in interior design–including Mediterranean Blue, Natural Earth, and Light + Sustainability. Always at the forefront of style and design, we are looking forward to experiencing the interpretations of these trends in living spaces during the months to come.
INSPIRATION - KAWS AT AGO.
At TUSCH, we source inspiration from both near and far. With a considerable selection of museums and galleries, we are lucky to experience exhibitions from around the world, right here in Toronto. Renowned for his larger-than-life sculptures, Brooklyn-based artist Brian Donnelly (better known as KAWS) made his Canadian museum debut at the AGO this year. The original exhibition, KAWS: FAMILY, features his signature large-scale sculptures of cartoon-inspired characters. Blurring the boundaries of art, popular culture, and commerce, KAWS brings a taste of mass media imagery into traditional art spaces for a truly unique experience.
During the month of September, our Regional Dealer and A&D Sales Manager, Les Garai, ventured to Spain. Spending time visiting the Valencia Fair, Les experienced the newest products showcased by Spanish manufacturer ACTIU, which seamlessly captured current and future interior design trends. At TUSCH, we love to seize the opportunity to travel and visit
our innovative worldwide manufacturers, and bring our consumers back the best selection they have to offer.
