For more than 35 years as a dance artist, Bonnie has managed to do the impossible: remain a dance fan. Although the constant hustle of securing gigs in an under-appreciated industry has almost made her retire/quit 100 times, she has built a, sometimes, thriving portfolio career that includes teaching, performing, mentoring choreographing, writing, and outside eye-ing.

Outside of teaching for Toronto Metropolitan University her accolades include being named one of Toronto’s top five dancers by Eye Weekly and rehearsal directing hundreds of people in Sylvain Émard’s Le Grand Continental!

We look forward to moving together!

Amidst all this instability, now is the time to support each other!

We, at Moonhorse Dance Theatre, along with Arts practitioners throughout Canada, have been listening and observing as many changes occur in our industry and how the loss of so much foundation is affecting the health of professional artists spiritually, mentally, physically, and practically.

From the AGO going on strike, to turmoil at Hot Docs; the loss of dozens of rehearsal and performance spaces, and announcements of Government funding cuts amidst overwhelmingly large numbers of Arts Councils applications for funding; the list of discombobulated theatres, dance companies, galleries, and organizations reaches across the country.

MDT is dedicated to the support of lifelong dance artists: those who have spent their entire lives through thick and thin, mastering their craft, taking risks creatively and financially, repeatedly waiting for months for their project grant approval to know if they are working or not. Yet year after year they persevere. Amidst all this instability, now is the time to support each other and the arts communities we so love.

How can you help ⁉️

✨Learn about grant dissemination processes of the arts councils by visiting their websites and contact them with concerns. Linked below is a recent letter from the Director/CEO of the Canada Council of the Arts addressed to the Canadian Arts Community. It gives you an idea of where we are at…
https://canadacouncil.ca/spotlight/2024/02/supporting-the-arts-community?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=CEO-Letter---Feb-2024-(EN)&utm_source=Envoke-0---General-List-(EN)&utm_term=Supporting-the-Arts-Community%3A-A-Letter-to-the-Community-fro&eid=b6740aab4700e9ad05c17534e56526be&fbclid=IwAR1YOtSJYXCD9E66hyNCFq1_ftcm4c3nb6jYQzNgUE5aZ6QZdH5j2Q97RS4_aem_ASNTCGLQ-ZCQPOO6YLF3B1do_GeAPvNnklaZKD4RDU4fHqoqcxSDSMHgHCZrV1TrIjLir4SHukRFIFpIWlyg0PGk

✨Listen carefully to policy makers as they speak about cultural and arts issues.

✨Talk to your friends, families, and colleagues about the importance of arts programming in our cities and towns.

✨Support by donation to Arts organizations that you wish to see grow.

✨And most importantly, go see a show! Bring a friend!

We are rich in culture.

Help us give these awesome humans a warm welcome!

We are thrilled to welcome Dancer, Choreographer, Actor, Administrator, Educator, Advocate and all round pro, SUSIE BURPEE; and former ED of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, AMANDA HANCOX, to our Board of Directors.

SUSIE sat on our advisory to offer advice and listen to ideas for our Founder Claudia Moore and is now making a deeper commitment to MDT.

AMANDA, a true artist in her own right, has dedicated her career to managing artists in transition, and championing lifelong artists in all their chapters! She is a perfect addition to the MDT board.

"Curious, clever, creative and caring, Ms Moynihan moves with dedication through the dance community, wholeheartedly serving and inspiring every artist who’s been fortunate to have her on their side. She was a devoted ally throughout all my artistic endeavours during our time together and I am deeply grateful."
- Claudia Moore, Founding Artistic Director Moonhorse Dance Theatre

It is with deep gratitude that Moonhorse Dance Theatre bids farewell to our longstanding board member and Chair, Christine Moynihan.

Christine has worked with Moonhorse Dance Theatre since the early days as an administrator, to then become a board member, and eventually step up to the position of Chair of the Board of Directors. Her investment with the company spanned over 20 years!

We at Moonhorse are sad to see her go but fully support Christine’s decision to move on and enjoy her artistic pursuits and family at this stage in her career.

We cannot thank her enough and wish her a multitude of love and success!

Did you catch BEAR?

Happy Saturday everyone! Here are some weekend reflections from our AD Allison on her recent solo show BEAR, presented at Citadel + Compagnie !

“To be honest, as soon as they opened the house on opening night, I was reminded as to why I had stopped performing. It’s terrifying! However, there’s something about creating and performing at this age that is truly liberating. My collaborators and I don’t have the energy to w**d through any inauthenticity, so what ends up on the stage is pretty raw and true.

During the run, I was struck with how many audience members related and appreciated the ‘this is me, this is now’ approach to the piece. Even though before I got onstage I felt truly self-conscious of what I was about to share, once I began, the whole experience became empowering.

The focus that Moonhorse Dance Theatre has on lifelong dance artists over the age of 45 is so important. Having a lifetime of experiences to draw from while creating makes the work of my peers and seniors nuanced, rich and textured.”
