Jen Aitken's first major institutional solo show, The Same Thing Looks Different, will be on view at The Power Plant starting June 23! @aitkenjen is a Toronto-based artist working primarily with sculpture. Aitken's practice considers how we relate to space, form, and material as we move through our urban environment. Common building materials—concrete, wood, and fibreglass—are formed into unexpected and ambiguous configurations that engage with the viewer's body and interact with the gallery's architecture. The upcoming exhibition will feature both new commissions and a selection of existing concrete sculptures. Aitken will also debut her first video installation, animating the geometric lexicon of her sculptures into an immersive prelude to the exhibit. ⚡ Meet Jen Aitken and the other exhibiting artists of our Summer 2023 exhibition season at the opening party on Thursday, June 22! https://www.thepowerplant.org/whats-on/exhibitions/the-same-thing-looks-different Images: Jen Aitken, Altered Cylinder A (Reaching), 2023. Congratulations to our talented RBC Emerging Artist Network participant Hajar Moradi, whose animated film The Shadow of My Life has been nominated for Best Animated Short at the Canadian Screen Awards! Written and directed by Moradi, The Shadow of My Life is about an artist who, after migrating to Canada, finds herself struggling with depression and finding her place as an artist in her new context. The film tells a story about how art comes to save an artist. Hajar Moradi is an Iranian Canadian multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Toronto. She is interested in mobilizing art to start conversations about questions of identity, resilience, and politics in practices of being and belonging. Her painting, installation, and video works deal with subjects such as memory, displacement, inclusivity, and female identity in contemporary society. Watch the Awards on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 8 PM on CBC and CBC Gem! #CanadianScreenAwards #CanadianScreenAwards2023 #TheShadowOfMyLife #HajarMoradi

'What the Barbarians did not do, did the Barberini' (2012) by Hiwa K is a large-scale sand sculpture and video installation that links monuments and sites as distant as Rome’s Pantheon and northern Iraq’s wasteland—filled with metal debris from the war. Created during the artist’s residency at The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, this work’s title is borrowed from a Roman expression that refers to Pope Urban VIII’s pillage of bronze from the Pantheon’s portico to create the bronze canopy in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. In history, Pope Urban VIII is recognized for his role as a prominent arts patron, but also for his expansion of papal territory through military force. In this work, Hiwa K builds transcultural and transnational connections to bronze as a metal used both in art and war, gesturing toward the shared relationships between the fields of visual culture, military power, and geopolitics. Influenced by the Pantheon’s coffered concrete ceiling, Hiwa K cast his sand sculpture using moulding techniques that mirror the forms of the building’s dome. ⚡️Come by #ThePowerPlantTO today and tomorrow to take the last look at this impressive installation before we close this season's shows! We're open all weekend long from 10 AM till 6 PM! #HiwaK #DoYouRememberWhatYouAreBurning #ThePowerPlantTO #SummerExhibition #ContemporaryArt #Refugees #Iraq #Kurdistan #KurdishArtist

Presented as part of the BREATHLESS group exhibition, guest-curated by Ala Roushan, the video is projected onto the pavilion every evening. 🔥🌫️ Join us this Wednesday, 10 August, to see this projection come to life together with Angela Schubot’s immersive performance as she explores new dimensions of breath. Angela Schubot: A BREATHLESS Performance 🗓 Wednesday, August 10, 8 PM - 10 PM 📍 The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery 🎟 Admission is free, sign up below: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/angela-schubot-a-breathless-performance-tickets-388723792327 #Breathless #ContemporaryArt #ThePowerPlantTO #Performance #ArtPerformance

In honour of Emancipation Day in Canada on August 1, we invite you all to contemplate Paulo Nazareth’s DRY CUT public sculptures on display along Toronto’s waterfront. As a part of the exhibition Paulo Nazareth: STROKE—the Brazilian artist’s first solo show in Canada—DRY CUT is a series of sculptures created from a single sheet of unfinished aluminum. Situated along Toronto's waterfront at Canada Square, HTO Park, and Sugar Beach, the four figures depict Civil Rights leaders Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Tommie Smith. Paulo Nazareth speaks in more detail about DRY CUTs and his choice to work with aluminum in an informative pamphlet—read it at the link below: https://thepowerplant.org/thepowerplant/medialibrary/Programs/TPP-Paulo-Nazareth-DRY-CUT-Pamflet_1.pdf Please join us for our upcoming guided Outdoor Sculptures Walking Tour happening on Thursday, August 11, from 5:30 PM - 7 PM! “Piercing the threshold separating inside and outside, the breath ignites the force that moves us, thinks us, dreams us, creates us, dances us, BREATHES us… until it does not” The sound you hear in this video is the artwork by interdisciplinary artist Donna Kukama, presented as a part of BREATHLESS exhibition, guest-curated by Ala Roushan. In this sound installation named “Chapter O: …” (2021), Donna’s voice interrupts the circadian rhythm of the pavilion with the asynchronous cadence of her breath, sharing personal narratives as we breathe together. Next Wednesday, August 3 at 8 PM, join us for an immersive dance performance by Angela Schubot at the BREATHLESS pavilion, where together we’ll explore new dimensions of breath. The name of Hiwa K’s exhibition 𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨?, currently presented at The Power Plant, comes from one of his video works with the same title. The video piece depicts a silent protest initiated by Hiwa and done with local activists on the Freedom Square in Saray Azadi, Sulaymaniyah, after two months of civil unrest. To boycott government censorship and military force, the artist invites activists to quietly read a book with a magnifying glass, which harnessed the sun’s rays and erased the book’s contents, letter by letter. This subtle act of collective resistance brings to light human injustices carried out by the regime while alluding to the ongoing longing and struggle for freedom. In our latest interview with the artist, Hiwa goes into more detail about his solo show and highlights the context of his central artworks. “When one goes from Mexico to the United States, or from Cuba to Haiti, or the Bahamas to the United States, one is also making a movement of return, searching for freedom; this freedom sometimes never comes.” In his recent interview at #ThePowerPlantTO, Brazilian artist Paulo Nazareth talks about his solo show STROKE highlighting the major themes in his work, from the long-lasting effects of colonialism to the continued exploitation of racialized peoples and the appropriation of their lands. Throwback to 2006 when The Power Plant presented a solo exhibition by renowned artist On Kawara: Consciousness. Meditation. Watcher on the hills. On Kawara was a Japanese conceptual artist who worked in New York for most of his life. The centrepiece of the exhibition was more than forty paintings from the Today Series, an ongoing project Kawara began on January 4, 1966, intended to culminate at the end of the artist’s life. Kawara builds a layered, monochromatic surface onto which he carefully hand-letters the date in white sans serif script for each painting in the Today Series. At the time of his death in 2014, the Today Series had accumulated almost 3,000 paintings. #Throwback #TodaySeries #OnKawara #ThePowerPlantTO #35YearsofTPP #Toronto #ContemporaryArt #ThePowerPlantArchives Image courtesy David Zwirner
