Varsity Blues alumna Kylie Masse heading to Paris 2024
Up at 5:45 a.m. In the water by 6:30 a.m. During her years as a University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimmer, four-time Olympic medalist Kylie Masse rose from being ranked 201st in the world to number one, breaking a world record for backstroke – all while keeping up an A average in the classroom to boot. Why does English have so many silent letters?
The Short Answer, with Dictionary of Old English co-editor Stephen Pelle No, silent letters are not meant solely to confound schoolkids and ESL students. Stephen Pelle, an assistant professor at U of T’s Centre for Medieval Studies, explains why there are so many words in English like “know” and “write” and “gnat,” where the first letter seems to serve no purpose.
