When introducing children to letters, it’s usually best to start with lowercase letters because these are the letters children see most frequently. It’ll be that much easier for them to recognize the letters in their environment, building confidence and interest in pre-reading activities. If you're looking for more fun pre-reading activities, check out the post on our blog "5 Easy & Fun Montessori Pre-Reading & Reading Activities". In it, you'll find: 1. I Spy language mats. I spy language mats are a fun activity, even if your child isn't yet showing an interest in letters quite yet. You can use them to practice colour recognition (i.e. find the items that are green) or to practice other sorting and categorizing skills, a skill that toddlers love to work on around this age, as it fulfills their need for order. Find the free printables on the blog post. 2. Letter baskets are a hands-on way to explore the sounds that different words make. Simply collect items that all start with the same letter sound and add them to a basket/container. Then go through each item in the basket with your child - "Look it's a mmmmmagnifying glass. Magnifying makes an mmmmmmm sound. One important note is to choose objects that all make the same letter sound, not just start with the same letter. For example, with the letter T, you could choose: Teddy bear Train Truck 3. Letter Tracing Boards 4. Phonics Sounds Chart 5. Letter Scavenger Hunt Get all the print outs to go with all these activities on the post! #montessori #montessoriathome #montessoritoys #montessoriactivity #montessoribaby #montessoriinspired #montessoriactivities #montessorischoool #montessorieducations #montessorichild #montessorilearning #montessorilife #monttesoripreschools #playandlearn #playtolearn #childledlearning #handsonlearning #playdiscovercreate #openendedplay #learningathome #educationaltoys #woodentoys

Brain Breaks: How They Can Help Young Children to Concentrate and Focus

Spin the Drum is a fun and simple toy for infants with many developmental benefits. We love it because it grows with your child and will be used throughout infancy and into early toddlerhood. The infant can start using Spin the Drum during tummy time. They'll reach for it with one or both hands, interacting with the drum, learning how it spins, strengthening their neck and developing their hand-eye coordination. Through this interaction, they'll also be exploring cause and effect AND stimulating the auditory sense. There is a small ball sealed inside the drum that rattles around when the drum is spun. Once the infant is sitting up, they'll continue to explore it in a similar way but now from a sitting position. Their fine and gross motor skills are being developed as they explore. Once the child has lost interest exploring it on the floor, you can add more of a challenge, by adhering the Spin Drum to the wall using Contact Strips at a sitting height. This gives them a new way to explore while also strengthening the muscles in their upper arms. And finally, once they're on their feet, you can adhere the Spin Drum to the wall at a standing height. Standing while exploring will continue to develop all the same skills previously mentioned while also strengthening the core. #montessori #montessoriathome #montessoritoys #montessoriactivity #montessoribaby #montessoriinspired #montessoriactivities #montessorischoool #montessorieducations #montessorichild #montessorilearning #montessorilife #monttesoripreschools #playandlearn #playtolearn #childledlearning #handsonlearning #playdiscovercreate #openendedplay #learningathome #educationaltoys #woodentoys

When presenting a new activity or skill to your child, it's helpful if you are sitting side by side rather than across from them. This allows your child to have a clear view of your hands and movements. In this video, Katie presents without any words, simply pointing to the part of the material she'd like him to focus on - the hole in the bead. Montessori often demonstrates skills without words so that the child can focus on the hands rather than the words. In this video, the child was eager to get started so after her initial demonstration, she stepped back and allowed him to take over. Even though he did not put the beads on the string in the same manner as Katie, he found a way that works for him and that's perfectly okay. There's no need for you to interfere if the child is doing it "wrong" or in a way that appears more difficult, i.e. in this case the beads and lace were dangling in the air, making the beads heavier and requiring more coordination. He figured it out and those three words at the end are really all the matters - I DID IT! #handsonlearning #playandlearn #parenting101 #montessoritoys #playtolearn #montessoriinspired #montessoriathome #learningathome #montessorichild #montessori #childdevelopment #playdiscovercreate #childledlearning #parenting #montessoriactivity #toddlers #montessorilearning #montessoriactivities #montessorilife #educationaltoys #woodentoys #toddlersofinstagram #preschool #problemsolving #preschoolactivities #parents #toddleractivities #play #parentingtips #earlylearning

A Learning Tower is one of the most commonly recommended Montessori materials because it's a fantastic way to promote independence and include children in practical life activities. What is a Learning Tower? It's simply a stool with a barrier around the platform to protect young children from falling off. It’s designed to allow children safe access to the kitchen (or bathroom) counter. So they can help with practical life activities, like cooking, baking, cleaning, or food prep. It's also great for independent hand washing. While it is an investment, many parents find it's the MOST used item in their house for 3-4 years. Fall is a great time to enjoy nature, learn about the changing seasons, and watch life cycles happen before your eyes. Here’s 10 of our favorite fall Montessori items (and why we love them!) * A children’s rake - great for developing gross motor skills and coordination. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to include your child in daily practical life activities (raking leaves) * A children’s wheelbarrow - perfect for maximum effort work, something young children love to practice * Acorn Soup (for ages 2-3) and The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel (ages 3-5) are great for developing problem solving, as well as social-emotional skills * An umbrella that’s just for your child is a great way to for them to practice self-care skills (e.g. it’s raining and I’m getting wet so I need open my umbrella) * Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn and Because of an Acorn are both wonderful books about the changing seasons and life cycles * The Plan Toys Kaleidoscope - SO much more than a regular kaleidoscope because you can add your own treasures from nature into it * A Jumbo Magnifying Glass - a handy little tool for inspecting all the treasures you find on your walks * Children’s Binoculars - a fun way to get a closer look at squirrel’s nests (dreys), changing leaves on the trees, or any of the birds that don’t fly south for the winter. Lightweight so they’re easy for children to carry independently. Find them all on our site >
