We all obviously know it's a bad idea to be sitting in front of a mirror at home picking at our face, but do you truly know why it's so bad?! 1. It typically only takes about 3-7 days for a lesion to fully heal on its own. But the healing time will double or even triple depending on how often you're putting your hands on it and squeezing it. 2. Estheticians are taught how to properly extract a lesion without tearing the cell wall and causing scarring. Sometimes our team members don't even extract specific lesions if they don't think it will properly heal. It truly is a part of their professional training and you don't know what you're doing (respectfully😂) 3. Touching an inflamed, infected lesion will only spread the bacteria from that pore to other pores. Thus causing a domino effect of more breakouts. 4. You more than likely will only push the bacteria further into the infected pore, causing more inflammation and worsening the breakout. 5. "Popping pimples" will delay your body's natural healing response. This is why you're always saying "it's been here forever! Or…"I always breakout in this area!" That's because you can't keep your hands off. We understand this is one of the hardest things to do. But whenever you feel the itch to pick, pop or pinch anything, grab a cold roller or some ice and cool it down with that instead! Then go schedule yourself a treatment @connectedhealthandskin so a trained professional can properly extract for you! #skincare #beauty #acnetreatment #pimplepopping #stoppopping #popbottlesnotpimples

I have seen a number of reputable Naturopathic Doctors sharing the dangerous misinformation that regular sunscreen use leads to low vitamin D levels and discouraging the use of SPF. Based on the current research what we know are these facts: • When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it manufactures vitamin D. The sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays interact with a protein called 7-DHC in the skin, converting it into vitamin D3, the active form of vitamin D. • Studies have never found that everyday sunscreen use leads to vitamin D insufficiency. • There is overwhelming evidence for the multiple benefits of sun protection. Controlled studies have shown that regular use of an SPF 15 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen reduces your chances of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40 percent, melanoma by 50 percent and premature skin aging by 24 percent. • It has been proven on the molecular level that the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the skin's cellular DNA, creating genetic mutations that can lead to skin cancer. • High-SPF sunscreens are designed to filter out most of the sun's UVB radiation, since UVB damage is the major cause of sunburn and can lead to skin cancers. UVB wavelengths happen to be the specific wavelengths that trigger vitamin D production in the skin. No matter how much sunscreen you use or how high the SPF, some of the sun's UV rays reach your skin. An SPF 15 sunscreen filters out 93 percent of UVB rays, SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent, and SPF 50 filters out 98 percent. This leaves anywhere from 2 to 7 percent of solar UVB reaching your skin, even with high-SPF sunscreens. And that's if you use them perfectly (and trust me, very few people use sunscreen perfectly). • It doesn't take much sun exposure for the body to produce vitamin D. Even committed proponents of unprotected sun exposure recommend no more than 10 to 15 minutes of exposure to arms, legs, abdomen and back, two to three times a week, followed by good sun protection. That

One of the most prominent fashion items this year has been face masks as cities and businesses make them mandatory. Unfortunately, this protective strategy may mean that more people experience "maskne" (otherwise known as acne mechanica). Acne mechanica is a type of skin irritation that is caused by excess heat, pressure and rubbing against the skin. Masks can cause debris, sweat and saliva to be trapped on the skin, which can trigger a breakout. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are my tips to preventing and treating acne mechanica: • Ensure that you skin is clean and well-hydrated. Dry and dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to acne mechanica. I recommend using a soothing moisturizer free of pore clogging ingredients and strong fragrances. At Connected Health & Skin, we have been busy mixing up custom moisturizers for patients to help address their unique needs. Contact me if you are interested in your own bespoke skincare products. • Spot treat blemishes or irritated skin with a non-drying spot treatment or serum like Zyderma HS Clarifying Cream, Osmosis MD Rescue Epidermal Repair Serum or Priia Calm Down Anti-Blemish Powder (available from http://www.naturaldermstore.ca/?utm_campaign=coschedule&utm_source=facebook_page&utm_medium=Dr.%20Jen%20Newell%2C%20ND). • Avoid wearing makeup under your mask. The combination of makeup and sweat under the mask can cause irritated skin and clogged pores. Play up your eyes instead! • If using a reusable fabric mask, wash your mask after every use with a fragrance-free and dye-free laundry detergent. If you are using disposable masks, wear a clean, new one daily - make sure you snip the ear loops before throwing used ones out to help prevent animals and birds from getting entangled. • If your skin is struggling, come visit us at Connected for a Customized Corrective Care Facial and LED treatment to calm inflammation and combat acne causing bacteria. Our LED Light Lounge is also the perfect addition to your s

All the staring into a computer screen and Zoom meetings we have been doing since the pandemic started and we all began working from home can cause headaches and eyestrain. I have seen more patients lately struggling with the health impacts of working from home (and the appearance of more prominant lines and wrinkles since seeing themselves on screen during meetings) and am so delighted to introduce them to the incredible Registered Acupuncturist that is part of our family at Connected Health & Skin - Baharah Hosseini @wellnessballa. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bahareh is exceptionally talented, intuitive and experienced. I believe that any patient will benefit from her care and have already begun referring my patients to her to enhance our work together and look forward to collaboration with her. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you have been struggling with the aches, pains and apparent aging of working from home, book in with Bahareh today to start to thrive during these crazy times.
