Meet piano virtuoso Dmitri Levkovich. He will join us for our Mozart & Janacek concert on Friday, January 26 at the Trinity St-Paul's Centre.
Dmitri Levkovich honed his piano skills under the guidance of prominent teacher Sergei Babayan for 11 years and studied composition at the Curtis Institute of Music. Renowned for exceptional artistry, Dmitri has garnered praise for his “profound musical understanding” (American Record Guide). He is the winner of more than a dozen top awards from international competitions, including the Cleveland, Jose Iturbi, and Gina Bachauer Competitions.
Dmitri has performed over 30 different concertos with orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, China National Symphony, Dresden Philharmonic, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Frankfurt HR Radio, Mariinsky, Sinfonia Toronto, Slovak Philharmonic and Utah Symphony Orchestra. He has performed in the Great Hall at Alte Oper Frankfurt, Beijing’s National Center for the Performing Arts, Berlin Philharmonie, Gulbenkian Foundation, Moscow Conservatory, Warsaw Philharmonie, Mariinsky Theater’s Concert Hall and Carnegie Hall and the Théâtre des Champs Elysées. He has participated in festivals including Deer Valley, New Contemporary Piano Faces at Mariinsky, Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam, Salzburg Whitsun, Ravinia and Ravello. His recording of Rachmaninoff’s 24 Preludes met with critical acclaim and earned Dmitri a nomination for the 2016 International Classical Music Award.
Recent performance highlights include the Grieg Concerto with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, Liszt’s First Piano Concerto at the Great Hall of Berlin Philharmonie, a debut at the Ravinia Festival and a performance at the 2nd International Mariinsky Far East Festival.
Performing worldwide, from the Berlin Philharmonie to Carnegie Hall, he has built a diverse repertoire. His own compositions have gained wide recognition, with upcoming performances by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the Verbier Festival Orchestra.
A few things you may not have known about Mozart - Pretty much everyone already knows that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is considered one of the greatest composers of all time. Just ahead of our upcoming Mozart & Janacek concert we want to share a few more tidbits.
1. He wrote his first piece of music at just 4 years old.
2. Mozart had a rather interesting sense of humor that included crude jokes.
3. His grave is unknown to this day as he was buried in a common grave. Only aristocracy could be buried in marked graves.
4. He was a Freemason and a few of his compositions reflect Masonic values.
5. His full name was 'Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart'. But he preferred to use 'Wolfgang Amadé'.

A bit about Mozart's 23rd Piano Concerto, which we'll perform on January 26 with pianist Dmitri Levkovich. Composed in 1786, the concerto is beloved for its lyrical, intimate character and considered by many as Mozart's finest. The first movement is in traditional sonata form. The home key of A major is one Mozart favoured for gentle, gracious works; the themes here follow this serene path.
Its famous second movement has been quoted extensively in pop culture. This movement is unique in Mozart’s entire oeuvre. It is the only piece he ever composed in the key of F sharp minor, a dark, mysterious, and spectral key, which is at the same time full of passion. Its simple A-B-A form contains some of the most touching and expressive music Mozart composed. The interaction between the piano and orchestra evokes the intimacy of chamber music.
The last movement is a joyful and boisterous rondo full of Mozart’s impish wit and humor.
Join us for our MOZART & JANACEK concert featuring music by Mozart, Janáček, Alice Ping Yee Ho and Kevork Andonian. Maestro Nurhan Arman will conduct this beautiful program - Friday, January 26, 8 pm, Trinity St-Paul’s Centre, 427 Bloor Street West.

Czech composer Leoš Janáček drew inspiration from Slavic and Eastern European musical traditions. His mature works blend his earlier forays into national folk music into a modern, creative synthesis. At our January 26 MOZART & JANACEK concert Nurhan Arman will conduct Janácek's Idyll.
Idyll was written in 1878 when the composer was 24 years. The world premiere was performed in Brno under Janácek's direction, with Antonín Dvořák present in the audience. Janacek wrote his Idyll to celebrate his daughter Olga’s birth, and its seven movements capture the love and happiness he felt then. Dvořák’s melodic style and use of folk elements are unquestionably the most common references and influences on Idyll.
Join us on January 26 to hear amazing music by Mozart, Janáček, Alice Ping Yee Ho and Kevork Andonian. Pianist Dmitri Levkovich will play Mozart's beloved 23rd concerto. Friday, January 26, 8 pm, Trinity St-Paul’s Centre, 427 Bloor Street West.
