ToRD strongly opposes the anti-trans protests planned for September 20th and 22nd across Canada. These protests are created with the goal of passing policies that will harm trans people, and particularly trans children, by spreading false information about an already marginalized group of people. These protests are also frequently used to create negative sentiment towards trans people in the general public to distract from other political issues. ToRD stands in solidarity with the trans community and believes that trans people deserve equity in all aspects of life, and protection from hate and discrimination. Members of ToRD will be counter-protesting, donating money to organizations supporting trans people, and making our position on this issue known to the public. We invite like-minded individuals and institutions to do the same.

Statement Re: Monster Muffin and the "Freedom Convoy"
On January 29, 2022, our league member, Lori Peltonen aka Monster Muffin, who is also the owner of the well-known derby apparel brand, also called Monster Muffin, was photographed attending the so-called "Freedom Convoy" and protest at Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
Reasonable people may disagree about public health policy. But regardless of the stated purpose of this protest, the presence of N**i and confederate flags, the shouting of discriminatory and violent slogans, and the racist, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, ableist, homophobic and transphobic rhetoric coming from participants and organizers alike shows that, from the very beginning, these protests were never peaceful, were never just about mandates, and did not align with the values of ToRD or our league’s Code of Conduct.
ToRD is committed to making our league a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for all marginalized communities. But since Lori is a longtime league member, and her business, Monster Muffin, is a longtime sponsor of our league, as well as the supplier of our jerseys, we felt it was important to give her an opportunity to see the harm she had caused, apologize, and make amends. To that end, we engaged Lori in an open and courteous conversation about these protests, their purpose, and who was responsible for organizing them, and we devised a possible structure for what this “making amends” process could look like. We offered Lori a choice - engage in a to-be-determined process (that would be created by our Conflict Mediation and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committees and approved by our Board of Directors), and make amends to the league, or we will have to recommend to the Board of Directors that ToRD sever our business relationship with Monster Muffin and find a new supplier for our jerseys.
Unfortunately, Lori did not want to engage in this process. She instead chose to double down on her support, hiding behind the naive and willfully ignorant declaration that the protest was only about “peace, love and unity”. Despite our attempts to help her understand the issues with attending a protest where N**i and confederate flags were freely flown, she refused to take responsibility or acknowledge the harm caused by her actions. Instead, Lori made the decision to sever her ties with ToRD, both for herself as a skater, and for her business as our sponsor and jersey supplier, rather than engage in dialog and steps towards moving forward.
ToRD is proud of the actions we took. We believe we made the right decision by first trying to see if the relationship with Lori could be repaired and offering a process by which she could make amends. We are saddened and disappointed that Lori chose not to take us up on this offer. But ultimately, we feel this is the best outcome for both parties, because without some sort of acknowledgement and apology from Lori, ToRD could not in good conscience have continued to partner with Monster Muffin. We wish Lori and her business all the best in the future.
