This is in anticipation of an announcement that the city will undergo considerable expansion in production infrastructure. Except... the business of infrastructure growth is a business of its own and does not guarantee further growth. In fact, when they start growing the infrastructure you can be reasonably certain that the indsutry is on the verge of a contraction.

"The industry has always shown that it's very good at training on-the-job, and attracting people in" says executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, which helps to provide a tax credit and financial support to the industry. "It's like the travelling circus with a bit more money … 14-hour days are common. We don't have regular work hours," said Pope, a producer. "So the first step is to figure out if this is a lifestyle for you."

Friends of Canadian Broadcasting // Les Amis de la radiodiffusion is a loose coalition of journalists, creatives, and cultural industry managers, and one of the very few independent watchdogs keeping an eye on the collusions between government and Big Tech. Friends point out that the most recent bill tabled to amend the Broadcasting Act from 1991, Bill C-10, is a stunning abdication of cultural independence. Consider this:
Old text: "each broadcasting undertaking shall make maximum use, and in no case less than predominant use, of Canadian creative and other resources in the creation and presentation of programming"
New text: broadcasters only need to use of Canadian creative resources "to the extent that is appropriate"
"designed around free movement and collaborative play – two things that have become near impossible in the current global situation" are words that show a theoretical self-awareness unusual for a corporate blog. The game is being retired to prevent it from becoming a cesspool of abuse, bigotry and partisanship and, of course, from smearing Microsoft's name in the process.

How does streaming actually work? vodclickstream.com offers a deep and independent look at big data, what people have been watching, when and how. It is significant, the study suggests, that so little information can be gleaned from the streamers themselves.
“It’s a sad fact that there is more publicly available data on how things work in deep space than on streaming platforms.”

New 'Mulan' is a beautiful, empty remake that will disappoint everyone. Here's why. Disney's remake is a fun but ultimately hollow action movie that lacks the humanity that made the original “Mulan” film so special.

Reopening of Manitoba's film industry could draw productions from across North America | CBC News Manitoba is poised to become a movie hotspot this summer as one of the first jurisdictions in Canada to reopen its film industry shuttered by COVID-19.
Summary of findings from an initial exploratory survey deployed between April 2 and June 2, 2020. Consider using members of the same household in a scene.”

Scams that for years went undetected are finally drawing some attention. Dozens of craft and technical workers in the independent film-making community regularly fall prey to such predatory practices, though undoubtedly the unprecedented precarity of work in an industry where, notoriously, “no one knows anything” is making people more alert.

Pre-existing problems with Quebec's Media Industries will complicate recovery. Two things stand out in this pre-pandemic post: the easiest way to reach audiences online is to "give it up for free" and to rely on government assistance as partial income; besides help from the State, Canadian content producers can not rely on help from Big (American) Tech whose hegemony rules their output, but who are not required to pay taxes.

"COVID-19 has exposed the true insecurity of the cultural workforce, and now we’re seeing the double-edged sword of “exposure” also extending to arts organisations."
Giving it away for free - why the performing arts risks making the same mistake newspapers did COVID-19 has exposed the insecurity of the cultural workforce. Making the performing arts freely available online may further diminish their value, right when the sector is arguing its worth.
I have a theory that we are in for a new era of Code-like restrictions, this time on medical rather than moral grounds. Thoughts?
